Catching a killer- channel 4
« on: June 02, 2017, 07:44:33 PM »

Hi ladies- did anyone see this programme last night? It was way past my bedtime and it felt uncomfortable to watch but I thought it was remarkably well made and haunting. It followed a real life missing person/ murder investigation.
It was a story of domestic abuse and a woman who tried to leave her controlling and abusive partner ( she had 3 kids ) as she had met a lovely man and spent a wonderful night with him the day before she was murdered by her partner. It was a stormy relationship, she had tried to leave him before, but if he couldn't have her, no one else could.

At the end of the trial, her brother stood up and said that they had agreed to make the programme as they wanted to highlight domestic abuse, what goes on behind closed doors and if it meant that only one woman managed to find the strength to leave an abusive relationship, their sisters death would not be in vain.

So for those of us lucky enough not to suffer in this way, we give thanks for the love we get. For any woman who has her life blighted, please find the strength to walk away and not look back. It can be done. There is a brighter future. For any dear friends or family members that you suspect of being abused, support them as much as you can. Abuse is often hidden, it crosses social and economic barriers. It's not always physical...It can be psychological... It can be financial. It can be any combination. Abuse is abuse. Pure and simple.

With love and best wishes to you all x

I ran out of an abusive relationship in 2009.  He was emotionally, financially and physically abusive.  That last time he did it I thought he was going to kill me.

I've put it all behind me but saw this documentary being advertised yesterday and it does make me feel grateful that I'm where I'm at today

I confided in my friend the day I left and she made me either tell my family myself or she would, I was angry with her that say but she really did do the right thing

I know what you're saying Annie. Glad you found the strength and courage. :foryou:
I agree Sparkle, her family were amazing- her poor kids and her poor mum. It's prayed on my mind today x

I watched it yesterday on catch up.  I can't watch things like that late evening or I don't get to sleep.  I have a lot of respect for the family going through it again to bring it out into the open.  Her mum is a brave little woman.

What struck me was when her brother (I think) said that if just one woman gets out of an abusive relationship as a result of the programme then Natalie's life would not be lost in vain.

Yah boo sucks to the critics who labelled it 'too voyeuristic'.  the family were clearly ok with the content.

I missed it but it's a subject close to my heart as like Annie I was previously in an abusive relationship.  When I broke out of it I realised that if it could happen to me (strong, intelligent, educated) it could happen to anyone.  Abusive men can be very clever and very manipulative.  I recommend the book 'Living with the Dominator' by Pat Craven which is based on the Freedom Programme.  It's really good and can help women (and men) recognise abuse in all its forms x

It's the slow manipulation that draws (mainly) women into situations that are difficult to extricate from.  What begins as an OK relationship can often alter when living together or after marriage ..........   One gets used to the little niggling put downs that become habitual and if living under the same roof, it can seem an insolvable problem.  There is help out there!  With help comes courage.

Well done!
