Mmm...what shall I do!??
« on: May 26, 2017, 12:14:43 PM »

Well...third GP at my practice agreed to start me on evorel sequi patches - cautiously as I have migraine with aura (fair enough)  I'm 47, with peri symptoms but still insisted on blood tests,  2 months patches given...come back in a month.
I've found them great, no migraine and no side effects yet (early days I know) most symptoms controlled/improved.  I told her this...not what she wanted to hear!..v strange reaction from her "oh dear, I thought they would surely increase your migraines...you know I wasn't keen on the idea of hrt for you?!! ..what happens now?!"  Me..." Err well I thought I'd tell you this and get another prescription ?"  I then explained I have vaginal sore/dryness (she didn't want to have a look) and could I have vagifem?  She said...no..systemic hrt should address these problems..you haven't taken it long enough..(which is maybe true) but she said in any case she would not prescribe anymore oestrogen! I said why not? Systemic is not always enough and it's not absorbed etc etc all fell on deaf ears.  So I was thinking going forward I would be able to tweak dose as I'm quite young and maybe move onto gel but I highly doubt it judging by this appointment...I think it will be these patches or nothing!  So I live fairly near London...is my best bet asking to be referred to a London menopause clinic?  I obviously know the answer 🙄 But what a nuisance.  Why do you think this happens?  Is it ignorance of what's available or cost?
Also advised vaginal dryness can be treated with any moisturiser put internally and externally! I said at best it could sting and at worst cause an infection!. On my god!! I left bemused....

Good grief! Ignorant GP's strike again..... >:(

I can't believe the utter rubbish we're told - it beggar's belief! I've had similar from mine (as well as rudeness) over the last year plus. In my case, I'm now having to go private if I can sort something over distance as I'm in Scotland, and we have a very distinct lack of private consultant's here.

No one should HAVE to do this! I can't see the point of the NICE guidelines if GP's aren't prepared to follow them, and were seeing more and more that they're not.

I have every sympathy with your plight.

I've been on a high dose oestrogen for 18 years and have still fallen victim to vaginal atrophy.  Your doc is wrong.  A nurse at my surgery took vagifem off my repeats as she said I was 'too oestrogened up' Lo and behold the UTIs started again.  I'm now on internal and external vaginal oestrogen as well as normal hrt

If I were you I'd gather proof for your case, both for VA and the patches relating to migraines and go back.  You need it sorting and it's much easier if it's done at the surgery if that's the only reason you'd need a menopause clinic x

Thanks ladies...I will go back (I'll have too!) if I get no joy I will ask to be referred as I may be on hrt for years , if hrt isn't their thing why can't they says so..look it up and phone you back?! ..she reluctantly gave me 2 more months patches.  she made me feel as though I was just after a better quality of life rather than a necessary thing...

There is nothing wrong with a better quality of life  ;)  What is the point otherwise?

better quality of life means you are less likely to be taking up consultation time for symptoms and troubles due to menopause.  they are short sighted when they refuse to give it if it is wanted.

Hi tempest, Annie, babyjane and dahliagirl...yes, quality of life is so important.  It seems these days you sort of have to know what's wrong with you and what treatment you need BEFORE you go to the doctors! I've recommended this great website to 6 women already this week...thanks ladies - this info and your experiences are invaluable x

I have had similar reactions from GPS. I am in Yorkshire, had to apy privately to go to a menopause clinic in Leeds. When I see my GP she just says what does the specialist say. GPs at my surgery haven't got a clue, sorry but it is true.
