Anyone watch?  That poor woman with the 'cluster' headaches which seemed to be in a specific area! which had apparently disappeared completely when she was pregnant.  Now that would have been the 1st route I would have taken as a medic.!  not altering her diet which sent her headaches into several every hour  :o which suddenly stopped and she would have no residual pain - until the next headache, reminded me of trigenimal neuralgia.

Interestingly that the Chiropractor was also a Nuerologist who had X-rays to hand of her cervical spine!!!!  ;) ..... so could chart the history of an RTA at age 15 followed by continual attacks of painful heads, had NO ONE taken X-rays or MRI scans ........ of course we don't get the whole medical history.  I wonder how she will be in menopause  :-\

The bloke who was into ice-hockey had problems with his shoulders, well from where I was on the settee that seemed to be a postural problem so where was *his* Coach  :whip: - and where was Paul Martin the Physio and advisor for Team GB in all this, after all the bloke was a Para-olympian ....... there really is no joined-up thinking in UK athletics and para-games !!!!!

Interesting that this GP is taking an interest regarding ailments outside of the NHS .......... similar to 'embarrassing bodies'.

I saw it, thought it was very good.  I wonder how many of wish a Dr could come and stay with us for a few days to really see first-hand what some of us are going through....I realise it isn't very practical but a good idea, especially for the girl with the cluster headaches.

I saw it too. really goes to show how you need to keep persevering to find the key to your ailments but also how difficult that can be within the NHS. I bet the practitioners they saw did a lot or even mostly private work. Still it was a hopeful programme as it showed you could improve peopl's outcomes quite dramatically with the correct treatment. :)

We have to employ more GPs with access to more specialised Consultants without having to fight for referrals!  We also need to be prepared to travel to these specialists which I would find difficult.

Was very interesting it was awful watching the woman with the cluster headaches bent double and her wee girl stroking her head I can't imagine how awful suffering something like must be and the para athlete I was thinking the same thing CLKD you would think if he was that kind of athlete then the Olympic trainers would have nipped that in the bud but maybe they didn't realise he was training like that at home? Also I was wondering about the woman as well if I was suffering headaches like that I would have seen a neurologist but of course maybe she had and they didn't find anything and sometimes I think if everything comes back normal clinically wise it can be put down to 'stress' which was certainly true in her case but all it needed was as you say so one to take the time and think out of the box now wouldn't it be wonderful if we all had access to someone like that  :)

Interesting but leaves me asking lots of questions.
The cluster headache woman - surely someone has Xrayed her before?
What in the end helped her?
During my journey to try and sort out my painful knee I met various professionals and they all had conflicting opinions and poo pooed child others theories or qualifications. The physio laughed at what the chiropractor said, the GP didn't agree with advice the physio gave me, the chiropractor said none of them went as in depth as he did and so it went on.

Yet on last nights prog the GP seemed to think the chiropractor was wonderful.

We know it can be tiring simply getting a GP appt. these days  :-\  ......... it wasn't evident whether it was diet that eased symptoms of headaches.  I think that there is a lot of jealousy between 'professionals' too .  I felt that it was awful that both those children were so involved with the mother's problem too.

Sometimes patients can think outside the box but the GPs/medics don't agree, some still hate that patients search the internet  ::)

Having  access to a doctor isn't all plain sailing either. Its how good they are and how interested in you that is half the battle.  I think perhaps wrongly, that if I go back and forth with a particular problem and they cant " solve it" by throwing medication at it, or everything comes back as you say , normal ,  then they kind of get fed up with you. Our practice has recently expanded and joined with another so there are a lot more GP's to book with, mind you, it doesnt make getting an appointment any easier as there are now twice as many patients.  I had to see a different GP from my normal one recently , and I was amazed at the difference.  The new one took time to ask about me , just general conversation , what I worked at etc, before then inviting me to tell him the reason for my visit.  I came away feeling really good about the whole appointment .  I know its not practical to do this at every consultation , your ten minutes would soon be used up, but it just felt good to be seen as a person not an ailment to be dealt with and pushed out the door .

By the way having access to a GP in the home isn't all its cracked up to be either .  They are so tired after seeing " real patients" all day you come way down the pecking order ! :D

I also watched "A Time to Live" last night, a film that looked at 12 people who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness.  It sounds awful but it was such an inspiring film and dealt with them living rather than dying.  If you didn't see it watch it on I-player (BBC2).

Me neither, I try to be in and out asap !! I have to laugh at the programme GP's behind closed doors, when the patient goes in , sits back and takes off their coat  :)  Ours looks panicked   if you even sat down.  ( Its an excellent programme though !)

I prefer watching GP's behind closed doors to 24 hrs in A&E! In behind closed doors, nobody ever seems to have anything too serious. Did you see the woman last night crying to the GP that she thought she was dying? Turned out she had chronic layringitis. I love it at the end when it comes up on screen what their ailment turned out to be. I like the Irish Dr, he seems very caring.

CLKD, I watched Doctor in the House - what baffled me, maybe I missed something - there was actually no explanation of the treatment involved by the Chiropractor that miraculously reduced Gemma's cluster headaches.  I really wanted to know what was involved - they seemed to sidestep it?

Also watched a Time to Live - so moving, inspiring and thought provoking.

Re: GPs Open All Hours - good viewing and informative - our GP surgery is the absolute REVERSE of everything seen on this programme!

I think that these programmes try to cover too much!  45 mins on a single person/condition would be better.  Didn't watch the programme last night .........
