Author Topic: Been using Vagifem 5 times a week, flare up-could it be the Vagifem?  (Read 11780 times)

Hi
I have been using Vagifem 5 times a week since January. Was seeing improvement but had recent flare up. Could it be the Vagifem? Just a thought. Prior to Jan I was on twice a week - since Sept 2016. Does anyone know? I am moist inside, it seems to be outside that I have a stinging at the moment. Thanks

Linfit - I had stinging on the outside just recently - wasn't sure if it was too little or too much Vagifem but then I assume if it was the Vagifem it would also burn inside too?  Anyway, I think I need to use something on the outside more regularly than I do, maybe that would help.

What are you thinking of using? Did you reduce the Vagifem?

Hi linfit - you could ask to be prescribed some estriol cream for the outer areas - it comes in two strengths - the generic at 0.01% and Ovestin at 0.1%. I would go for the weaker generic so that you can apply it liberally to the outer areas.

I use Vagifem and I always find it irritates my bladder the day I use it!

Sparkle - maybe you could think of using estriol too.? You really do not need to worry about Vagifem increasing fibroids - it really can't do this (well infinitesimally small risk!) - there is so little oestrogen! I'm not sure who has worried you in this respect. The most important thing is to use enough - and the loading is important for this - to plump up the tissues. Once they are plumped up then this limits what little systemic absorption there is. Every 4th night may well not be enough - the old dose was 25 mcg twice a week, The newer low dose is 10 mcg twice a week  so you can see the difference. The minimum would be twice a week eg change Monday and Thursday or similar. The lowest dose possible advice used to be for full HRT - even though it's now outdated. It doesn't apply to Vagifem! Better to be comfortable and protected if the current dose is not working for you?!

Thanks, I have some Ovestin which I have used on and off but not systematically. I will try that. I am using Vagifem five times a week (on advice) and was doing so much better. Just recently stinging came back, seems to be mostly outside and a bit of bladder pressure which had gone. Why do we get these flare ups? Is that the six million dollar question?

Hi is there a bio identical pessary that can be used instead of vagifem. Hopefully a plant oestrogen one?

I've replied on the other thread nigela - all local oestrogen products contain bio-identical oestrogen either as estradiol or estriol - so not worries there.

linfit - sorry I can't answer that - I'm not an expert on VA (Maryjane is though!) since I've always managed to keep mine at bay with systemic and local oestrogen.

HI Maryjane
Do you happen to know what causes the stinging on the outside of the vagina? Is it dryness? Vagifem seems to be helping me keep moist inside but I have stinging outside. I know it might seem a silly question but I am just wondering if it is dryness or something else? Irritation?? Inflamation?

Thanks

HI CLKD, does it stop your stinging though? Should I carry on using it or not? Any thoughts?

Yep, no stinging ....... for me that's caused by dryness round the general area Sudacrem is also good at easing stinging.

lint I also have a bit of stinging the day after using Vagifem, though I find the Sylk lubricant very good. I also bought the Yes water based one .  Maybe if you eased off slightly to perhaps three times a week then reintroduce to five if you find you need it?

So Do I assume that bio identical is better than other forms of oestrogen? Safer that is? I did get some bladder irritation with it. My GP is to se if there is a pessary without the lactose though as it did cause my stomach pains to re appear. Just hoping it wasn't perhaps it irritating old endo sites and that t wasn't the lactose that I guessed at! I see it says use with caution in folks who had endo, but then also mentions migraine and loads of other stuff. Hope that once or twice a week would be enough to keep the VA at bay. I seemed to feel better with more energy though, unless this was psychological! Anyone else feel improvements with these? I did try serenity creams in the past but these did not seem to do a lot.
thanks again

Even if it's psychological it don't matter, it is what it is!  Finding out what the problem might be can be Trial and Error which is Oh! So! tiring!
