Interesting reply from Prof Studd re: uterine scans.
« on: May 04, 2017, 04:58:22 PM »

I've been wondering about whether to have a uterine scan, because I have been on Studd's regime of 4 pumps + 100mg Utrogestan for 7 days a month. I have read lots of times, that if you're using such a lot of oestrogel and only opposing it with a bit of Utro, that you need regular scans.

So, I emailed Prof Studd to ask for his opinion (he has never mentioned scans to me, during my consultations). I told him that my withdrawl bleed after stopping Utro is extremely light, really just brown spotting for 2 days. I don't have any bloating, or discomfort, and no other breakthrough bleeding at all (up until recently, I also had my own 'natural' period around the 25th of each month, which was also very, very light - but that hasn't happened since March). I have even managed to lose quite a bit of weight, and my tummy no longer looks like I'm 5 months up the duff!

He replied, very quickly, to say that he would only advise a scan if I was having very heavy, or irregular bleeding. And, that the Utro was obviously working and keeping my withdrawl blled nice and light, as it should.

So, there you. Just thought I would share his response.

GRL, thanks for sharing that and I'm glad you are feeling better.  Professor Studd has never suggested I have a scan either and he doesn't make regular scans a condition of his 7 day 100mg Utrogestan regime.  I have regular scans now because I take less Utrogestan than that (I can't even tolerate 7 days a month) and I'm now under strict supervision with the gynaecologist - so far, so good.

Hi MaryG  :)

I seem to have some months on 100mg Utro, and barely notice it. Then other months where it gives me a headache every day, makes me feel flat, and then a really nasty mood dip comes with the withdrawl. Really odd.

I am assuming that his regime has finally managed to pretty much shut down my own cycle, so the fluctuations are much more bearable? Or, maybe my cycle is ending of it's own accord, as I'm nearly 47 and no other woman in my family has lasted this long before their periods finished.

I just thought I would pass on his thoughts, as I know a lot of women are scared by the dangers of high oestrogen intake.

Hi GypsyRoseLee,

Thank you for sharing that info. I removed mirena after a year about 3 weeks ago. A UK Meno specialist (after skype consultation) said I should start HRT immediately to help with symptoms. I had insomnia, mood swings, feeling low, anxious, anti-social etc and some hot flushes. I am 48 and def still have a regular cycle (even with mirena) so she prescribed 2 pumps oestrogel (building up to 4), 100mg Utrogestan continuously (with 4 day break end of month) or 200mg for 14 days. I started on 2 pumps (still on that dose) split between morning and evening and use 100mg progesterone most nights. Initially it made me feel really tired but it also had an immediate positive impact on my sleep. 3 weeks on, I still have the odd day where I feel low but overall am feeling much more myself.

My question is are you still peri, how long have you been on this regime and how did you build it up. Also did you start testosterone straight away. I am just surprised at the high dose of oestrogel before menopause. Also concerned in my case that the progesterone will not be enough to stop heavy bleeding. Had my first period start 2 weeks after Mirena removal, no pain but on and off quite heavy (even though am using progesterone).

Many thanks
