Ears & coughing
« on: April 24, 2017, 11:44:59 AM »

Morning Ladies just wondering if anyone else has suffered with what I can only describe as really itchy ears but not as much in outer ear, more in the eustachian tube area. I had a bit of a post nasal drip last week, could have been a cold as I did feel a bit fluey, did not have a runny nose persay but tender sore  eustachian tubes and cough cough cough, which has now resulted in plenty of phlegm, esp at night that it almost chokes me. It seems to stem from my ears though, I cough so badly that I actually gag. Its not in my chest all in my ear tubes and throat, I read that fluid cannot drain down and out into ones throat via the eustachian tubes as they are far too thin for much more than air, so perhaps its coming from the back of my nose, sinus, but this constant cough cough is keeping me awake and the mucus is just so unpleasant. It does seem to be getting better but just had another bout of couging now, I can feel it coming on when my ears start to itch then all hell breaks loose.... :( any suggestions. Have tried steaming and vapour rub but cannot get to the itch, which is the frustrating part.
Thankyou Dahliagirl I would like to try that not mad about water going up my nose, I actually googled netty pots, but it sounded somewhat complicated with sucking the water in and then letting it out the other nostril, wasn't sure I could manage that, without standing on my head, your method sounds a bit simpler, will try it now.

Could be tree pollen allergy  ??? - have you tried hayfever antihistamines like loratadine or cetrazine?

Sometimes I find ibuprofen at night helps a bit.

Also rinsing your nose out with salty water - 1pt boiled water, 1tsp salt and 1/2 bicarb.  Cool to nose temperature, suck up (GENTLY!) one nostril at a time (block the other one) and blow it out (and have plenty kitchen paper to hand).  I find this particularly helpful if my nose gets sore or bleedy.  It takes a bit of practice - you can get 'netty pots' but I use a tall thin glass.

I seem to have developed a permanent snot problem - must be more allergies  :(

I've just had a bout of what you describe, well still have 2weeks later. Started off headachey, sinuses feeling blocked, ears right feel inside itchy, managed somehow to perforate ear drum then gunge started seeping out of ear. Then this stupid tickle at one side of throat which made me cough and cough till I was nearly sick, just horrid ! Got abs from gp for ear infection which have helped. Still get caught at times with this stupid tickling in throat though. Vicks inhalation has helped somewhat and running on chest at night. Hope you feel better soon you he my sympathies,I'm into 3rd week now ! >:(

Thx ladies, Megamind, I am not coughing it up so couldnt say but I think its clear, if my nose is anything to go by.
That is exactly it, Dazned that itch to the side of my throat which makes me cough that I want to be sick, just had a bout right now that my eyes water its dry and itchy and then after coughing myself silly for 5 mins I loosen a bit of what I can guess is stubborn phlegm, which is why I thought it may be dripping from my ears into my throat, but this is apparantly not possible or maybe it is, do you think your ear fluid was dripping into your throat? I dont think I have perforated anything, no pain just this terrible itch and annoying cough, almost wheezy but not in my chest just throat....grrr... 3 weeks, I will go off my head... >:(

12 months ago I had a couple of days of feeling unwell - followed by a runny nose and felt better; then the cough began  ::) - for 3 weeks!  Once it went it disappeared quickly and I regained energy levels.

As oestrogen levels drop off so muscles become lax = aches and pains.  Eustachian tubes can be affected.  My ears itch deep down [spaniel ears] probably because they are dry.  A good wriggle can help or I shake my head  :-\

I have had post nasal drip for years ....... and if we don't keep the dust down then I get itching on the roof of my mouth, deep in the throat and on the chin  ::)

I hate salt water as I hate the taste of salt!

You could try putting a few drops of olbas oil in hot water and inhale over a bowl of it.

 ;D ;D  :o :o Cassie - that is why I said gently  :-X

If you get a bubble of air, it goes whoooooosh!!  Well done for trying- you will get better.  That is also the reason for plenty sheets of kitchen paper at the ready  ;)

If you get the water the right temperature and manage to suck it up one nostril without any air, then you hardly feel it - just have to work out when to blow it back out.  A yoga teacher once said to suck it up through your nose and spit it out through your mouth, but that is going too far for me  :o  It is the 'cure' of choice for sinus problems these days.

As CKLD said, dust is a problem. Mine must be full of pollen.  A good vacuum cleaner (both the machine and person) is very useful.  I have to do my own.  :(

You can get a spray of seawater for up the hooter (sterimar?) from the chemist.  However, it is not very cheap.

Why put salt up the nostrils?  I found that Beconase dries up my nostrils if used too often ........ one needs to begin locally 'grown' honey in about Feb. in order to ease any allergies .... of course, I forget until symptoms begin  ::)

Will keep practising I actually have an old nasal drops bottle with a dropper I could put the water in there and try that. I think CLKD that the natural mucous in the nose would consist of salt and water and this is the purest way of rinsing out the nasal passages and keeping them lubricated  :-\
