Perimenopausal
« on: April 24, 2017, 09:11:27 AM »

I was without a period for 7 months until this weekend and the build up to it was horrendous with the most sore boobs imaginable and feeling genuinely ill for 2 days on the lead up to it.  I therefore presume I'm perimenopausal?!  Any suggestions for things I can take as I feel absolutely drained and achy although I'm not losing a lot because I had a endometrial ablation done about 5 years ago.

Sounds like you are well in the middle of it all!  You don't say how old you are but assuming you are of "a certain age" then yes it sounds quite normal.  The night sweats were the worst for me.  Talk to your doc about HRT if thats the route you want to go down?

I have just turned 50 and have had the night sweats for about a year now.  Not that I sweat, I just get extremely hot and look like I'm going to explode!! My husband says its like sleeping next to a furnace! I have spoken to the nurse at my doctors and she said that because I have just had another period, they are reluctant to put me on HRT yet.  Does anyone recommend something in the meantime?

She's talking RUBBISH ............ there are many ways of easing this time of Life but some medics simply don't know enough about how hormones can affect ladies.

Browse round. Make notes.  Some ladies find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary useful.

As oestrogen levels drop off muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  The body may become dry, inside and out ...... i.e. skin, hair, eyes, deep in the ears, vagina .......

I was having regular periods - it was the night sweats which made me realise something wasn't right - especially when for 48 years of my life, I had been a champion sleeper.  Alas, that is a thing of the past now!

CKLD is right, your doc is talking rubbish - go back and stamp your foot or cry or something to get your point across.  If still no joy, pay and see one of the specialists, they will give you a prescription and then write to your GP telling them what they have done so they can continue with the repeats.

Good luck

hello - thegregs52- your GP practice nurse is talking mince. you can start HRT during the peri menopause! Have a read at the tabs on this site, make some notes/ print off and get another appointment booked. You shouldn't be dismissed like this ( unfortunately too many of us have been in the past which is why we're a bunch of militants)  :welcomemm:

Seems like you are transitioning from perimenopause, towards the menopausal. It is normal to begin with HRT....hope thing will change positivly for you

Thank you ladies, that's very helpful and very nice to know that I'm not just making a fuss.   :-*

I've always had trouble with my periods since day 1 with horrific hormonal symptoms and was eventually diagnosed with polycystic ovaries after 15 years of regular visits to the doctors and that was only because I was trying for a baby!! I was therefore expecting my menopause to not be an easy ride!

I will definitely be visiting the actual doctor and not a nurse to see what they can do as I work full time and am finding it very hard to concentrate and stop myself from falling asleep!

Hi the gregs52

 :welcomemm:

Yes I agree with the others - you are definitely peri-menopausal and OF COURSE you can start HRT while still having periods. If you have had an ablation I presume you have very little lining so actually HRT should be more straightforward ( depending on the reason for your ablation)?

Absolutely no need to suffer and you could start a cyclical HRT straight away as long as your medical circumstances do not make it unwise.

Following on from my original post, I then had another gap of 7 months (bit like a 7 monthly cycle) and another period out of the blue.  The sore boobs and feeling tired and irritable might have been a clue again but you never know!

Anyway, I keep getting a very red sore neck and chest that gets itchy when I get hot but I don't seem to be getting any hot flushes at the moment.  I don't know if this is a menopausal symptom or not as I also have an underactive thyroid which I take medication for.  Does anyone else suffer with this?
