Will my doctor prescribe testosterone?
« on: April 16, 2017, 10:10:36 AM »

I'm nearly four months into the mirena coil and oestrogel. Not sure whether the coil is going to work out for me - I'm bleeding every day, and have been for almost all the time except a few weeks - but I'm going to give it 6 months.

But I know my testosterone is really low. It was tested at the doctors and by a private GP when I was considering bio-identical hormone treatment. It was almost non-existent.

I feel like I would benefit from some - despite lots of weights, muscles are very weak, libido low, fatigue.

WIll my GP consider throwing it into the mix? How do i go about getting it?

It really seems to be a postcode lottery on that one ! ::)

Some will, some will only if a specialist has prescribed it initially for you,and some just won't! It's not licensed for women and that seems to be the route cause of their reticence unfortunately.

My gp was scared to prescribe it so asked a gynae for advice who agreed to authorise the prescription.  You need to speak to a gp who cares and will listen.  I did give her lots of info that I'd gathered myself too and that impressed her that I was serious about trying it.  In fairness she admitted she knew nothing about it with women and I think she wanted to understand it all x

That's correct. Not licensed for women but NICE guidelines say it should be prescribed if the woman is aware of possible side effects (which only happen if you use  tons more of the stuff  than advised).

I'm one of a few women on here that are using it and the daily pea sized blob hasn't turned me into a bearded, baritone voiced,  sex pest.

Go armed with the NICE guidelines and healthy dose of determination and you never know, your gp might buck the trend and prescribe it.

Let us know how you get on  :)

Hi all,

Just wanted to update you. Went to see my doctor yesterday because she wanted to see me as I'm still bleeding 4 months into implementing the mirena. On that score, she's sending me for a scan.

But I bought up testosterone. I said I felt i was the right profile to try it. I laid out why, I said I'd looked at the NICE guidelines (i had them with me, but she didn't need to see them) and I said I wanted to try.

She said 'I don't see why not. Let me make some calls.'

She's going to telephone me next Tuesday. But she was very open, responsive to my questions and generally really great. She didn't know much about it, but she promised she would by the time we spoke.

She might say no, but I feel like I was listened to.

Sound so promising, don't give up though if you're desperate to try it.  I also promised my gp I'd be very sensible with it and admit if it didn't help, I think everything collectively added to me getting it, more so that she cared

Thanks. Yes, I told her I just wanted to try. That I would stop if it didn't work, that I would be very sensible. I think I came across as intelligent and well-read - frankly, I knew more than her - and at this stage, she showed her willingness to help. We shall see. More next week. x

Hi Noheroicsplease

Great to hear you have a doctor willing to listen! That's amazing - that she will presumably ring up a gynae to discuss it. This also happened to someone else recently on here - can't remember who and when but the outcome was positive (she got the T prescribed) - hopefully it will be for you too :)
