Cerazette - any advice on what to expect?
« on: March 26, 2017, 07:49:09 PM »

Hello

After horrible heavy bleeding experiences GP put me on Cerazette just over 4 weeks ago. It finally stopped the horrendous bleed after taking 4 pils and have had all the random spotting I would expect. In fact I have felt so much better in myself since taking it, no mood swings, no acne breakouts, sleeping better and just feel well again. Anyway of course day 25 of taking it I started to bleed which has been okayish but I am now on day 6 and still bleeding. Days 4 and 5 very heavy flooding and today not so much floods just regular gushes. I take my pill at lunchtime and I seem to get 6 clear hours of no bleeding then it starts up again. I am changing a towel maybe every 2 hours? And it's nothing like as bad as it is without - I was losing huge clots and most of my iron from early December to the beginning of March so this is much easier, just some smallish clots and some heavy gushes. I am just wondering if this is normal as it settles in?

I wondered whether I might be heavier bleeding than I might have expected due to thickened womb lining as the last measurement was 23mm in November (I am seeing Gynae on 5th April as the GP "forgot" to refer me in November).

I know this POP is marmite but I really love it and I want to persevere with it. If this can reduce my periods and get me into menopause without surgery I will be chuffed, but I don't want any more 14-90 day periods as my body has had enough.

Thanks all, any replies gratefully received x

Hi TalullahsMom

Your post got missed! I don't visit this section much and perhaps others don't either. Yes sounds like the bleed is the progestogen in Cezarette thinning your lining as that is pretty thick at 23 mm! You could also have a Mriena coil instead to control the bleeding if this doesn't work so well?

I'm not sure how Cezarette works re your normal menstrual cycle ie are you supposed to get a normal period as well? Is so that would explain the bleed starting up again - or maybe just there is still lining to be shed?

Good luck with the gynae and let us know how you get on!

Hi Hurdity

Thanks so much for the reply, I am continuing to bleed off and on with it. I would say I had a 7 day "period" and since then I spot and bleed for about 6 hours a day and then nothing at all. I changed my pill to taking it earlier in the morning so it is manageable. With cerazette periods are supposed to stop all together but forums say this isn't so and most have about 3-6 months of settling in. I hoped anyone with experience using it on here for heavy bleeding might have been able to give me their experience.

I went to see Gynae, he said let me read this letter off the doctor, yes what I will do is put you to sleep, do a hysteroscopy and put in Mirena and that will sort it in about 6 months. To be honest I have read a lot of negative about mirena and don't want to try it in case I hate it and then have a rigmarole having it removed. So I said no, I have agreed to have the hysteroscopy while awake to check there are no abnormalities and then will proceed from there.

I think this is the womb lining thinning - I know 23mm is a lot! Gynae wasn't bothered, he said could be 23mm one day and 5mm the next and periods do go haywire before they stop. I don't think anyone can understand how disruptive the bleeding is unless they are living with it.

Thanks again for the reply, I will keep posting xxx

Hi Tallulahsmom, I was also prescribed Cerazette by my doctor in December for heavy bleeding (though nothing like as continual as yours).  All was well for three months, then three weeks ago I had another very heavy bleed - even worse than before, with the gushing you describe every time I stood up (apologies if TMI!).  So I went back to the surgery, to find that my lovely sympathetic doctor has gone on a 6-month sabbatical and I had to start from scratch with someone else.  She eventually agreed to prescribe me Provera as a last resort to help stop the bleeding if I have another period (I'm 53 and beginning to wonder how much longer this can go on!), but was really pushing hard for me to have a Mirena fitted.  I'm not keen on this idea and my regular doctor was sympathetic, but the locum was coming across rather like a Mirena salesperson!  I'm sticking with the Cerazette for now and waiting to see what happens.  Hope it works for you eventually

Hi Venetia

I missed this as I hadn't checked it. Oh what a nightmare for you, thankfully mine is not as horrific on Cerazette as it is without.

I stopped taking it for three days earlier this week as this Gynae wanted me to stop it as it can affect the hysteroscopy. Well 48 hours was fine, knock onto 72 and I was heavier, again not as bad as I have been but enough to disrupt sleep so I started taking it again yesterday and within a few hours it settles (but doesn't stop) the bleed. I have decided to persevere with it, I know the thickened lining has to go somewhere and I guess this is a bit more gradual than Norethisterone (which hates me).

I hate the pushing of Mirena, I had a choice this week with my tablets to decide to carry on or stop but once that Mirena is in there it's not coming out right away if you want to stop and I just know if my lining has to go I will be bleeding anyway so no point.

How long have you had the heavy periods for? I would just like some indication as to where I am with it all but the docs just seem to want to fix it without considering it's a thing that you want to know what is happening, why it might be happening and how long it might go on for.

Thanks so much for replying though, it really helps having everyone on here to talk to xxxx

Hi there, I think in about the last two years the periods have become really disruptive - though sometimes less frequent, I had one gap of five months (Oct 2015 to Mar 2016) when I really did think I was out of the woods!  So imagine my dismay when it started again worse than ever.  It was the period of Mar 2016 which finally took me to the doctor which led to various investigations - pelvic ultrasound which revealed a small fibroid and a thickened lining (though I was never told the numbers), which led to a referral to a gynaecologist under the two week rule which really got me panicking!  A biopsy revealed nothing more suspect than age-related thickening of the womb lining so I was sent back to the GP who ultimately prescribed the Cerazette.  Nothing untoward now for three weeks so I'm just keeping everything crossed!  It is very disruptive and distressing when you can't even get out of the bathroom, never mind the house...

This forum is amazing, there's so much knowledge here and it's so nice to know there are other people in a similar boat!

Oh I can imagine your dismay I had already had a 90 day bleed about 4 years ago but I had a September 2015 to February 2016 gap no periods woo hoo and then another from June to November 16. Then a two week bleed which I thought okay no worries until I started again on 4th December and just hasn't stopped.

I have a simple cyst on my right ovary, my smear test has come back borderline changes and I am bleeding through the cerazette, literally floods this morning although that will be because I had stopped it the few days.

I am waiting for a hysteroscopy and I will be honest veering towards hysterectomy unless they have some definite answers. I just cannot live like this. Sorry for going on, just feel like it'll never end. I am glad you have had a good 3 weeks though fingers crossed and long may it continue xxx
