I'm New
« on: March 21, 2017, 01:18:35 PM »

Hello I'm new to all this and you can probably gather the state of me in that it's taken about half an hour (and tears) to actually work out how to post and I still don't think I'm in the right place!

I've just turned 50 and am still having fairly regular periods just getting more and more frequent and heavier.  I have hot flushes and insomnia but my real problems are my moods.  I can get so angry and irritable, depressed and anxious.  I just generally feel as though I'm sinking rather than swimming and of course I have all the worries of women this age with elderly parents but still children young enough to need support.

I gave in last week and went to speak to my surgery about HRT.  Had to go and have blood tests today.  The nurse had told me I could have patches but today told me it would have to be tablets (Elleste) as I still have periods.  I didn't take the prescription as tablets scare me but had hoped for some support and advice.  I've always had headaches and am worried about this getting worse and I've also heard it can make you feel nauseous. I'm also worried about the progesterone side as I've always had pmt and am worried it could make my moods worse rather than better.  Any advice gratefully received!

hi there,
not sure if i can offer anything useful but im on the elleste solo patches. ( 2 a week)
i had a full hysterectomy 6 years ago at 44 so i never have the menopause symptoms like your getting i just went straight onto hrt within days of getting home.
but i am prone to mood swings and i find the patches keep me pretty level most of the time.
im actually scared now of when the time comes for me to come off them but talking to these wonderful women on here ive been told i dont have to come off them if i dont want to!

plenty of great advice on here for you.

Thanks Mandy

I have a friend in a similar situation to you, must ask her what she takes.  That was another worry of mine that by starting I might not be able to stop.  I think I will get my blood results and have another chat.

Sounds like you might be in the late reproductive stage if you're still having regular periods. You could have a look at
https://www.menopause.org/docs/default-document-library/straw10.pdf'sfvrsn=2
for an idea of where you are. I think PMT can get very bad for some women at this stage, one of my colleagues is going through the same.

I found magnesium helped my headaches, but no idea if that was a coincidence or not. Worth noting what your ferritin levels are like too as the NHS are happy with 15 when really they should probably be nearer 50 for good health.

No idea about HRT, hopefully someone else will say a bit more about it.

Hi Tanuki

I know where you are coming from!  I am exactly the same, but without the hot flushes.  Its a horrid kind of limbo.. I started progesterone only HRT about a month ago, but think I may have started it all a bit too early.  Take lost of advice, shop around and listen to the lovely ladies here.

Good luck

Hi Tanuki and a big hug and welcome  :welcomemm:
I'm sure there will be others along soon more versed in HRT than me but I just wanted you to know that you're not going mad. I had the same peri menopausal symptoms as you and struggled on alone for quite some time before being offered anti depressants which initially I didn't take. Then I went down the herbal route with limited success. You've done the right thing by going to your GP and it was good to hear that they didn't automatically offer you anti depressants.

I think they tend to start off by prescribing Elleste Duet and no doubt, it works for many women. However, it can be trial and error to find one that suits and if you have an intolerance to the type of progesterone in them, you may need to change to a kinder progesterone e.g. femeston. You can print off the HRT types from the website and take it to your doc to discuss but apart from cost, I see no reason why you can't take separate oestrogen as a patch or gel and progesterone orally or vaginally if the Elleste doesn't work for you. BUT you need to start somewhere and apparently you need to try them for a few months to see how things settle. I'm just about to start on my 4th HRT regime and am a bit anxious as I'm wary of the side effects of the progesterone based on my experience to date.
Keep a diary- the sequential Elleste didn't give me headaches but when they switched to cyclical HRT, boy did I have headaches, ditto with cyclical patches. my moods did get worse ( like PMT ) when I was on the progesterone part of Elleste but you'll only know for sure if you keep a diary. As you're peri you'll be only offered sequential HRT so only take it for part of the month. Try your GP again and let us know how you get on. Hopefully your sweats and insomnia should get better soon x

Obviously your GP has been reading up to see what is appropriate for your current situation.  You could put both products into the search button on here to see what differences are between the 2?

:welcomemm: ...... browse round.  Make notes!
