Fatigue and the menopause
« on: March 17, 2017, 04:17:01 PM »

Hello l dont know if anyone has any advice for me but l thought a problem shared etc.... I have been in Peri-menopause for years and now my periods have stopped completely for the last three months. But l seem to have been hit by a crushing fatigue and a friend of mine remarked on how pale l am. I worry about anaemia as l was also diagnosed with ulcerated colitis last year. So l suspect that it is a combination of the two! I have regular blood tests because the colitis can cause me to have low iron. But they have come back okay. I have had some dizziness as well. Has anyone else felt a similar way and what did you do about it?

:welcomemm:   yep.  Most things that we suffer from are mentioned here  ::) including dizziness.

Have a browse round.  Make notes.

As oestrogen levels drop off muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Also the body may become itchy: the skin dries out, i.e. nostrils, deep in the ears, vagina, scalp ........

Crashing fatigue is mentioned several times here, I remember Mum sitting down and suddenly dropping off to sleep for several hours at a time.

I Agree with Sparkle and it was my first thought.   You need to know your folate and b12 levels are optimal not just in range as colitis can  reduce your ability to absorb these x

I do not know if they have checked for folate and b12 but l can find out. I think maybe a look at supplements and diet to try and boost my system. I sometimes think it would be easier to say the symptoms we haven't got than the endless list of the ones we have ;)

I feel like a preacher but seriously only trying to help.  With conditions that compromise absorbtion of nutrients taking supplements isn't always the answer as you'd struggle to even absorb them yet they'd sit in your body raising the levels for blood tests, so a false reading.  You can ask surgery for a print out of blood test results (it's your right) or log onto your online system if you have one with surgery and results will be there for future tests x

Also ask for your ferritin (stored iron) level. Some GPs only flag it up if you are very low, eg under 15. But low ferritin can cause fatigue if it's below 50-70. Even if you don't actually have anaemia.

That's my worst symptom, I feel it's robbing me of life.  When I'm at work it's a constant battle to keep up the pretence of coping   :(
