Utrogestan vs Provera dose info please
« on: March 05, 2017, 03:44:20 PM »

Hi

I have recently changed from 100mg of Utrogestan taken orally every day to Provera.

As I'm post menopause I use the estradot 50 patch as well so it's a continuous treatment, no break and no bleed.

i had no major problems with the Utrogestan except rather a lot of weight gain and feeling horribly tired all the time with absolutely no energy.

I was prescribed 2.5mg daily of the Provera and I've only been taking it for less than 4 weeks and I'm already on a second bleed.

I assume that this probably means that I'm not getting enough progesterone from the Provera?

Does anyone know how much progesterone the Utrogestan 100 delivers as opposed to the Provera? What I'm trying to find out I think is how much I might need to increase the dose of the Provera to give me the equivalent of progesterone from the Provera. Does that make sense?!

Hope someone can help! Thanks ladies.

That's a complicated question. None of this is from my personal experience, but much reading on the subject as I considered switching to Provera. My understanding is that those two doses are equivalent for the purpose. As in, you can't really compare them directly because they just aren't the same, but 100 mg of Utrogestan or 2.5mg of Provera is prescribed for daily continual use. I think Provera is a "stronger" progestin than the micronized progesterone in Utrogestan, so a very tiny 2.5mg does the same work to your endometrium as 100 mg of the other. Also to consider, I believe the Utrogestan is not as consistent in how it is metabolized in the body, so the amount you actually "get" may vary from another person or day to day for yourself.

It may be that the Utrogestan wasn't doing a great job at keeping your lining thin, so the Provera is catching up. If you feel well, I would note it and watch it for now and expect it to settle soon.

Hi jiliyrich.

If you look at the treatment options it states 2.5 or 5 mgs of Provera to be taken daily post menopause.

I agree with Lizab that the bleeding could be due to the Utrogestan not keeping the womb lining thin enough however if it doesn't settle over the next couple of months you may need to increase the dose to 5mgs a day.

Would you mid keeping me updated on your progress as I am thinking of changing from Utrogestan to Provera and would be interested on hearing how you are getting on with it.

I currently use Provera on a 2 monthly cycle (12 days x 5mg). I do plan on trialing a daily dose of 2.5mg at some point, so I don't have any personal experience yet.

However I agree with the others that the Utrogestan may not have been keeping the lining thin enough. That was my experience with it when I used it and that's one of the reasons I changed to Provera.

I'd suggest maybe doing a cycle of the Provera (say 5mg x 10-12 day) so you have a "clean out" so to speak and then try the 2.5mg again.

The dose of Provera is also quite variable for some women. You may need to be on the 2.5mg for a few months to see if things settle. If that don't work you may need to increase the dose slightly.

An alternative conti method I have considered, if the 2.5mg everyday doesn't work, is to try something similar to the Utrogestan conti method ie 5mg x 25 days.

Thank you for your help ladies.

I think I'm going to keep on the 2.5mg until the end of March, see if things settle down - this will have given me almost 8 weeks on it. But if I have another bleed then I will up the dose to 5mg and see if that sorts the breakthrough bleeding out.

Although it's a bit early to tell, I do think I actually feel a little better on the Provera (apart from having period like pains and the bleeding, which I could well do without!).

Lanzalover - I will certainly update you with my progress, keep your fingers crossed that the Provera works out well for me please!
