Testosterone again...Can't my GP prescribe Tibolone?
« on: February 02, 2017, 02:20:37 PM »

Hi everyone, thanks for reading..

I've been going round in circles since I had my BSO and total Hysterectomy last June
Am currently on 0.25 patch once a week - which seems to suit me, but would like testosterone..

I have asked my Doc, but she seems reluctant and has referred me back to the hospital (to the consultant who did my op)

Trouble is, this is 8 weeks away..

Soon it will be June again and it seems I'm no closer than a year ago to getting my HRT sorted.

I thought docs/gps had the power to prescribe and I could just try various HRTs until I felt comfortable rather than be referred and have to wait the 8 or 18 weeks or whatever it is..

I think Tibolone would suit me, apart from worrying about hair loss, but isnt' it very weakly androgenic? (as well as weak in everthing else?)

Thanks for reading..

I'm feeling ok on this really low dose of HRt, but still think I could do with testosterone as libido non existent .. also have noticed vaginal tissues a little drier..

I can't take the higher levels of patch or gel.. so don't want to go down that route in order to be able to

Abby
No ovaries
BSO June 2016
Currently on 0.25 Evorel weekly

Hi, Abby!

Sure!! Your GP could prescribe, but if they are anything like mine because you see a Consultant, they won't 'go over their head'. What you could do is phone the clinic and explain that you'd like to change to Tibolone, and 8weeks is rather too long to wait. They in turn could get in touch with your GP and ask for it to be prescribed.

It has to be worth a shot! xxxxx

Hi abbyh and tempest
Well I haven't even had my hysterectomy yet but wanting to be prepared I asked my GP (who is fantastic) if I would be able to get testosterone prescribed from.her . She said no that the partners had made drvisipn not to prescribe it but I could be re referred to menopause clinic and ask them . However my GP said she was happy to prescribe me tibolone after I have hysterectomy!
Very strange how all gps are different

It's because there is no licensed Testosterone product specifically for women available at the moment WTD, and therefore prescribing Testosterone is 'off licence' which a lot of GP's are not comfortable with.

Tibolone is fine because it is a licensed drug and has been around for many years - most GP's are very comfortable prescribing it. :)

Thanks tempest, I think I shall be taking the tiboline route if my estrogen only patch doesn't work. I have been following the tibolinev thread on here and it does sound hopeful xc

I'm not allowed Tibolone as I'm over 60 which is a shame!!

abbyH, my gp refuses to too even when I went armed with the NICE guidelines that said she could and quoted womens positive experiences from here.

So I ended up taking matters into my own hands but only because I was absolutely desperate and there isn't a menopause clinic or specialist near me.

It's a shame that it's a lottery and I hope your local clinic do prescribe you some.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi ladies

It was the new young women's health nurse that came from the gynae dept who first told me I was eligible for testosterone or Tibolone . But she said I'd have a fight on my hands with the gps because

A) testosterone is off licence
B) I've had a hysterectomy so can't have the progesterone content of tibolone

Well, I argued my point that no one had sucked progesterone out of my body all those years post hysterectomy that I was naturally producing it and she was speechless, said she'd never thought of it like that before and will investigate

Months later I stumbled across a lovely gp who really wanted to help so she contacted the gynae dept for me to find out what I can have.  Within a week they replied testosterone or Tibolone

So you don't need an appt, there's nothing to examine so there's nothing stopping them just issuing a prescription

Fight Abby and tell them it's a waste of a valuable appointment when all you need is a prescription xx

Exactly!
I've been going round and round in circles.. and I want a trial of an HRT which is ideal for me as I have no ovaries and am not producing my own hormones, so far oestrogen only hrt has not suited me :(

Strangely enough at the moment I am feeling ok, my hair has stopped falling out and is looking ok and I've lost some weight..

This might have something to do with increasing my thyroid meds, which I have done..

I am waiting for a phone call today from doc, it's ridiculous that she has to write and ask the hospital. My consultant actually told me because I was so close the the menopause (bfore the op) that I didn't actually need HRT!!!! so I'm not really that keen to go back to her for hormone advice
I'll keep you posted on the phone call outcome...

My GP is sympathtic and agrees I need Testosterone - but she agreed that in July/Aug last year and here I am still without!
its really not on

Be very firm with them, Abby! There really is no reason why you can't have it and as I'm in the same position as you with no ovaries, you can quote my case if you like!

Please do let us know how the call goes - good luck and hugs!! xxxx

thanks Tempest, how are you doing on it?
Hair ok?
Thats the only thing that bothers me as my hair (finally) seems to be in a growing phase!

I would just like to be adequately supported hormonally, it's not too much to ask..
And I think the consultant doesn't have any idea about hormonal profile post surgical menopause, as she did say it wouldn't really matter if I didnt' have HRT!

Balderdash, clearly...

Abby it was the fact the scan showed NO OVARIES on me that the gp fought for me.  I said to her that when she contacts the gynae STRESS the importance I have no ovaries !

It's despicable it really is ! X

I'm cautiously optimistic about the Tibolone, Abby! ;)

You can see how we're all doing on the Tibolone thread.

Annie has hair loss worries too, and so far I think all's ok on it isn't it, Annie?

I always get scared to mention hair in case I jinx myself

I'm about Day 31 ish
It's more manageable but frizzier and I don't think any loss due to Tibolone just a steady loss I was getting anyway but I wear my clip ins daily (that makes me anxious)

But, only today I started looking at wigs, I really need to de-stress over hair so maybe a really nice wig is the answer ? X

Edit: I was looking on YouTube and my god there's this really pretty woman in her 30s with hair loss and she does reviews, she rocks every single one of them x
