5 Days Post TAH!
« on: January 31, 2017, 12:33:03 PM »

Hello
I've posted before about erratic bleeding, differing HRT regimes and the Mirena. In the end, my condition of adenomyosis got the better of me and I had a Total Abdominal Hysterectomy on Thursday.

My question is, following this operation, is it automatically required that you should increase your oestrogen? Or is it still trial and error? I'm currently on about 44 mg of an extradot patch. I kept my ovaries by the way.

Thank you Elizabethrose.

Doing well so far, not needing painkillers and haven't been constipated! However, putting my feet up is the hard bit!

Hi Mis71Mum

I hope you get full and speedy recovery! If you have kept your ovaries I think your docs will go on with your regime but without the need of progesterone (amen). I guess the oestrogen level will be addressed based on your menopause symptoms rather than the absence of uterus, but I'm just guessing...
I'm sure someone here will pop up with a more scientifc answer.

Personally, I'd say stay as you are.  If your ovaries haven't been affected by the surgery nothing hormonal should  be different

I had my total hysterectomy when I was 32, I just stayed as I was but within 6 months I experienced menopausal symptoms, my gp said the blood supply to the ovaries had been affected, it can and does happen but you'll know it as you'll experience more or stronger meno symptoms then you can increase your oestrogen

Thanks ladies for your replies.

As I still my ovaries I think I will have to put up with fluctuations here and there. However I won't have to take any progesterone again.

For now, just enjoying being bleed free for the first time in 6 months!

Yey MurphyDurf, you're back!
Did you realise you are famous on another thread? Some members have been missing you.

Yes I do remember us speaking before - constant bleeding, back ache, stomach ache, low mood with the Mirena all got to me! In the end, I realised that whilst ever I took oestrogen my condition wouldn't improve, so took a gamble whilst relatively stable. Let's hope it pays off.

How are you now you've have the Mirena removed?

Well the first few days after removal were nasty with VERY heavy bleeding which I didn't expect but seems to be calming now. Like you, I had all the bad side effects and none of the good things. Feeling brighter already. Did you have yours removed before surgery or do they do it during? Pardon my ignorance, don't know about these things but I'm interested, particularly the no prog part!

This was a question that I asked my gynaecologist. The Mirena came out at the same time as my uterus, so I didn't have to endure any more bleeding.
I think I had read that some ladies do have the Mirena removed before surgery but luckily that wasn't the case for me.
I'm hoping that in time, my brain will register that I no longer need progesterone and I will happily take Oestrogen alone! That's the plan anyway!
Hope things settle and improve for you xx
