Switching from Utrogestan to Provera
« on: January 24, 2017, 10:03:32 PM »

Any input or advise welcome, especially success with Provera stories!

I am 56, post menopause and have been on an estradot 37.5mcg patch and taking 100mg of Utrogestan orally every night for approx 18 months and was feeling ok for about the first year.

Now though I am so tired I can hardly function, I've put on masses of weight, I'm ratty and grumpy, downright miserable, can't concentrate, and basically I just can't be bothered with anything anymore.

After doing some research I wondered if the dose of progesterone is too high, or whether a different one may suit me better.

So anyway, I've been to the docs today and asked to try Provera.  It surely can't make me feel any worse than I do at the moment!

Should I give my body some time to "clear out" the Utrogestan i.e. A week or something before starting on the Provera or do you think it's ok to just stop the utrogestan one day and start the Provera the next?

Thanks ladies.

I can't really give any advice on what would be the best thing do. My gut instinct would be to take a break for a little while mainly to see if you will get a bleed or not. Hopefully you shouldn't get one if the Utro has been keeping the lining at bay.

However I did just to say that I'm someone who was never that happy with Utro and I've been using Provera for a couple of years now and I'm much happier with it.

I take it on a 2 monthly cycle though so I only take 12 x 5mg tablets every other month. At some point I plan on trying a continuous method. I'm going to try 5mg x 21-25 days per month, or my doctor said I could also try 2.5mg every day to see if that is enough to remain period free. I hope so because at almost 58 I'm really getting tired of having periods.

Hi Dana

Thanks for your reply.  I'm glad to hear you're feeling better on the Provera than the Utrogestan, hopefully I will too.

I will be taking it daily, so no bleed (yippee!!) but am just unsure whether to give my body a short period of time after stopping the utrogestan to try and clear the build up/backlog so to speak, before starting the provera.  I did ask my doc this question and basically he said "if I want to". Not particularly helpful!

Hopefully someone will come along soon and give me more guidance than the doctor did!
