Estradiol Help Needed
«
on:
January 22, 2017, 11:49:44 AM »
Morning
I've been on Estradiol patches for 4 days now. As I've had a TAH with BSO this is a surgical menopause so hot flushes have been very intense & have brought me to tears
but since I've been on Estradiol patches the hot flushes seem to be more frequent than before, is this normal? Thanks for any advice.

Yorkshire Girl - Early days yet. If you were very oestrogen deficient then it's going to take time for the patches to work their magic - at least 2-4 weeks for the oestrogen levels to build and that's if you are absorbing the oestrogen OK. What dose are you on? DG x

25mg dose is far too low!!!! How old are you? If you are under 55 then you would probably need at least 50mg patch. In the mean time I would continue with your current patches but perhaps contact your doctor to see if you can use 2 at a time and then when you run out ask for the 50mg patches. DG x

Hi Yorkeshiregirl
I don't think I've said
yet!
Dancinggirl is right! This is too low! I see you are in your 40's. I am amazed you were not given oestrogen soon after the Zoladex injection because that mimic menopause. 25 mcg is insufficient to protect you from osteoporosis.
However if you have been without it it is wise to build up slowly so personally I would keep at this dose for a couple of weeks or so and then as Dancinggirl says look to doubling it (at least!) - your doc should be on board with this.
You may also need testosterone although it is important to get oestrogen levels stablised before thinking about this. There is some information here:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/aftermeno.php
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/testosterone.php
There are some other women in your position on here and hopefully they will be along to share their experiences too - it can take a while to settle on the right dose after such a drastic operation and the hormonal shock to your system.
Hope this helps and do let us know how you get on - really hope you start to feel better soon and those wretched flushes start to decrease.

Hi, I also think 25ug is very low. I am BSO and on 75ug, it took a month really for things to start to settle, I started on 50 and that was not quite enough, feeling faint etc. I didn't start until 2 weeks post surgery as consultant didn't feel I needed it!! Then went into melt down and started on Femoston initially, I think I did feel worse before I started to feel better though.
Good luck!

Hi I am in a similar position I was on zoladex for 1 year but cycle still occasionally got through. I am now on a nasal spray which works most of the time . I am on estradot 50. Did you have to stop your hrt before the operation as this sounds awful? I am hoping for ovary removal this year. Do you feel worse than on zoladex?

Hi Donna
I was not given hrt while on the Zoladex. Answer to your question yes! While I was on Zoladex I had hot flushes but nowhere as bad as they are now! Since my TAH BSO I had a few night sweats they lasted 2 weeks but it's the intense hot flushes I hate afterwards I go so cold.

I have been on various hrt but estradot 50 which seems to work best. My own hormones still pop in & out but I can only stay on this medication so long. I was hoping that was my answer😢

Donna, although you haven't yet chosen to have surgery, you are welcome to ask questions in the surgical menopause thread. xxxxx
