Smelly fridge
« on: January 07, 2017, 04:57:50 PM »

Another problem today ladies.  I've got a fishy smelling fridge.  I've thrown out food near dates, washed whole fridge  thoroughly soapy water, bicarbonate & it still smells.  I've checked the drain, it's clear too.  Not sure what else to do.  I've ordered a new fridge deodoriser to see if that helps. I bought one from kitchen shop on high street & it's still within date, but maybe it's been overworked since Christmas.  It was fine up until then.

Any ideas?

We have a fridge each: now there's posh  ;D.  Himself likes 'ripe' cheeses which stink, could you have a cheese in there?

Boil a kettle and add lots of lemon juice to it, put into a heat-proof cup whilst it's still hot and put into the fridge allowing the steam to permeate?  Or borrow a steam cleaner?  Usually bicarb of soda works  :-\ - I use Cif or Milton in ours.

No need to throw 'near by' dates, food keeps for ages after  ::)

We did have cheeses in fridge after son's wedding, but hubby ate them so fast they didn't have time to stink out the fridge.  ;D ;D ;D

Pretty sure it wasn't the foods, but they're gone now.  I'll try the lemon, anything's worth a try.  Thanks.

How is the door seal?  I find that those on the fridge and freezer get black and Cif gets rid of that.  Is the fridge 'up' low enough, i.e. -5?

Fridge is low enough CLKD. In fact made it lower over Christmas when it was very full.

CG, I've had the same problem two years ago in our fridge in the vacation home we own.  Two things worked very well:
- Put an open bowl of freshly ground coffee and leave it for a while.
- Alternatively, put a bowl of strong vinegar (open) in there and also leave it.

Depends on which smell you can toletate better. I had first a bowl of vinegar then after a week or so changed to coffee and had the coffee in for about a month.

Worked very well!

Nothing is curing the smell.  Phoned manufacturer who said it was very old & could possibly be costly to fix, we're now arranging to have new one.  It's an integrated one, so been in touch with original kitchen fitters & they are going to measure up to make sure we get proper replacement.  Probably a bit more expensive, but possibly cheaper in the long run. In the meantime keeping fridge contents down to a minimum. Got on lowest setting, but it still stinks to high heaven.  :beaurk:

Nothing to hoover CLKD.  Not sure how I could do that.  It's a fitted unit.

Mine had a fishie smell just before the motor broke. It was the motor burning, but not on fire.

Happened to my DD's old fridge and they too had to replace it. It was disgusting and their kitchen smelt for a few days after removing it, even though my DD scrubbed the area.

I read that about the electrics too, which is why we've decided to replace it.  Just hope someone comes to measure soon!  I suppose, at least with it being winter, we could store some things in the garage. It's freezing out there.

Removing our fridge from it's unit would require a lot of muscle.  It sits in it's own unit above the freezer.  Door needed fixed once & guy needed hubby's help to remove the fridge to fix it.

AAAHHH - ours are all floor standing.  I wonder as we get older whether everything should be eye-line height?
