changing forum name
« on: December 12, 2016, 11:09:31 AM »

I am considering changing my forum display name.  I know others have done this at times.

Does it generally work or does it cause confusion and misunderstandings?

Hi babyjane, have to say it has confused me when I've realised that someone has a different name when looking at old posts. I'm thinking of Honeybun and that generation of posters. When Cubagirl left her recent goodbye message as Joyce I was confused. But heyho, if you fancy a change, why not?!

I suppose we all of us remember snippets about other posters and who may be able to offer advice etc. I've been PMed a number of times by members asking for particular advice relating in some way to my posts. I've realised that some members don't always wish to make their questions public. What's making you feel you'd like to change? x

Its just a thought, I may not if it is going to confuse things.

babyjane is a childhood name and this year I have been working to step away from my childhood.  However it is just a name, it does not define me  :)

When I left, my name reverted back to original. Same happened when Honeybun left. No confusion was meant.  ::) However, you're only changing name, not leaving. You can change your name & tell us if you wish. What do you fancy?

cubagirl, I wondered whether when members left their real names were exposed which was a worry. I was really confused as to why on the older posts I was referring to, i.e. Honeybun et al, posters had two names. How does that happen? Had they left and then returned? Actually, whatever happened to Honeybun, she seemed like a really nice lady? x

I don't want this question to lead to a postmortem of why older members left.  That was not my intention.

The way I understand it your original username does not change but you can change your forum display name.  If you leave, your original username shows and any display name you have changed to disappears.

I think I'll leave it as it is or this thread is going to digress and cause upset. .  As I said, it's only a name, it's not really me  :)

Actually I quite like it when someone refers to me as 'BJ', sort of like a nickname.  I never had a nickname.  I will leave it as it is.

Honeybun is doing fine ER.  :)

Don't feel upset BJ! That wasn't what I was intending. Sorry if that's how it came over. Yes you're right though, when you leave it reverts back to your original name.

Oh dear, it was an innocent question, certainly don't want to cause an upset!  ???

BJ sounds American! Like a cool character on American Graffiti! x

I know you didn't mean anything cubagirl and elizabethrose   I've seen how these things can sometimes escalate and I didn't want to be making waves  :ola:

We register a user name which remains even if we choose to alter what members see us as.  I altered my original user name as I realised that I could be identified by it  ::) but should I go 'black' then it will revert.

??? ??? Why do you want to change your forum name babyjane (if you don't mind me asking)?

Cazikins.

;) ;) I remember your original user name CLKD, I think you changed it a few times before settling on CLKD  ::) ::).

I deleted my account once several years ago but didn't change my name - I had no reason to  :) :)

hello cazikins, I was thinking about it because babyjane is a name from my childhood which I am moving away from but I realise it is only a name and doesn't define me. I don't need to run away from it and it would be confusing so I changed my mind about it.

BJ or babyjane! For us, your name does carry any connotations, other than the name of a lovely member of the forum. And you were always lovely, regardless of what those around you told you. They tried to impose their version of the story of you on you, but they couldn't see the beautiful you. That was their problem. Your name is the name of someone who not only has survived, but is starting to flourish. A name to celebrate!
