Fainting
« on: December 09, 2016, 05:11:56 PM »

Hi there,  wondering if anyone has had fainting spells in menopause? On holiday just now and managed to faint on the flight over. Fainted in March too,  both times were about 8 weeks after a period (only two occasions I've skipped periods so far). Think I've had a hot flush both times.

Thought the March episode was down to low ferritin so a bit annoyed. Have had loads of blood tests this year and an ECG maybe 3 years ago.

Seems like too big a coincidence not to be hormones. I know a few friends fainted a lot in early teenage years, but not sure if it is a documented symptom?

Here's hoping tomorrow's flight goes better!

Not actually fainted Nearly50 but have felt close to it through peri.  I think with me it was related to low blood sugar but also happened when I had what I can only describe as panic attacks.  Must have been horrible fainting on the flight!

Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

I'm travelling alone so I think it was actually worse for the elderly couple sitting beside me!

Drama follows me these days!

Not fainted so far in peri though I've come close (edges of vision start going black but it doesn't 'meet in the middle')  It used to happen quite often pre-peri though, especially the day before and first day of my period.  Also used to get this weird feeling that all my blood was pooling in my legs.  I'd have to lie down quickly when that happened or I'd be out like a light!

I had a spell of dizziness which would have led to fainting if I'd not been able to lie down. I also experienced palpitations at same time. Once tests ruled out any other cause - I was told it was menopause related and after increasing my HRT dose it all settled.

Thanks,  think I was just unfortunate in being in a situation where I couldn't lie down. These pesky hormones affect everything!

Hi there,
I'm a long term member of forum but rarely post nowadays.   So many more knowledgeable people on here :)

But just popping on to say that I do know about fainting!  It was in my early 40s when my periods became erratic.  In fact it was the major reason I went on HRT as the fainting attacks gave me so little warning that I was worried it could happen when I was driving.   In those days I was doing a long journey up the M1 to my parents every month and the idea of fainting at the wheel terrified me.   The first time it happened I was sat down in a friend's armchair and came to on the floor.  Another time it happened in a London theatre during a very quiet bit of the play and was hugely embarrassing :-\

I was told by my doctor that I appeared to be experiencing big swings in my oestrogen levels and she thought that caused the faints.   The only other time in my life it has happened is when I was pregnant so it does appear to be hormonal for me.

Once I was on HRT it never happened again and has never occurred since although I have been off HRT for many years.   I am Way Older than You ;)
Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks Crescent, got home ok without incident. Having the air conditioning blasting in my face helped - the rest of the plane were wrapping up with cardigans and scarves while I was still burning up.  ;D

Just realised that me going over 60 days since my last period means I'm in now in late perimenopause - woo and hoo. A reminder to myself that this won't all last forever.
