Is This Atrophy
« on: November 16, 2016, 11:18:56 PM »

I'm a watcher mostly and rarely post but it seems very supportive here so I thought I'd ask for opinions. I've been suffering 'down there' for months. Tested for everything and finally referred to a cancer clinic as my doctor didn't know what else to do. Saw a gynaecologist who diagnosed Atrophy and prescribed Vagifem. I have one dire spot that looks like a white ulcer or like white spots all clumped together. I worry he missed this. It is not improving. I am on Tibolone as well as Vagifem and sex is totally out of the question. Nothing seems to be improving. Is this familiar to anyone? Should I push for more investigations. I have stomach cramps too but put that down to IBS. Thanks for reading

I did use to get mini ulcers at the beginning of my atrophy yes.

You could turn up at a GUM clinic no appointment needed if you are still worried , or ask to be referred to a vulva dermatologist.

Yes they have gone .......however it has taken a lot of oestrogen to get to a reasonably comfortable place. I need local everyday plus systemic HRT.

Mine used to come and go , sometimes 30 at a time.

Have you been checked for LS ?

Lichen Scerlosis?

Use the Vagifem every night for a while if necessary, have the symptoms eased at all?

I would definitely get these ulcers looked at - better safe than sorry.  Appropriate treatment can then be given. DG x

Hi roisen. I have just posted after a while "in the wilderness" and you will see that my main concern is vaginal atrophy, which looking back on it, has been my biggest symptom and probably the cause of many others!

I starting having bladder and vaginal soreness 5 years ago, followed by some light bleeding, 18 months after my "normal" periods stopped, so "post menopause". This was investigated by a hysteroscopy, and the Consultant said that the vaginal lining was VERY thin and ulcerated, and very pale in colour, a sort of grey, but was normal! Ha, great for a male Consultant to say that, he had no idea of the irritation it has caused. If was felt in my bottom, affected my pelvic floor, as this was so tight with the tension, and gave me cramps and IBS. I also had weakness in the tops of my thighs as though I was having a heavy period. I can still feel the soreness and pelvic tightness as I write this 5 years on. So I do understand how you feel, noone had ever told me about this side of menopause!! I am still looking for the Holy Grail of vaginal repair!!!

Wanderer - do get treatment for the symptoms you describe.  Which needs to be used as often as required ;-)

Hi wanderer,
God sounds horrific. Yes consultant I saw said 'do you want to know what's wrong with you?' Like, yes ! He then said nothing was wrong with me. It was atrophy. Which I agree sure doesn't feel like nothing. Will catch your threads xx.

Hello,
like MaryJane suggested, Lichen Scelrosus is worth considering. I have Lichen Sclerosus and it started with thrush like symptoms and little dots of white skin on the vulva. It progressively got worse, the white dots joined up and became patches. I was very sore, itchy and small fissures started appearing. The skin atrophied and shrank.  But it is treatable and has responded very well to treatment.
You need your GP to refer you to a vulva clinic (I was wide eyed when my GP said that....they have vulva clinics?!!....I was new to all this :-)  )
At the clinic they do a skin biopsy to to test for LS and also rule out other things like vulval cancer.
The treatment is a very strong steroid ointment, used intensively at first, but you taper off and now I have very healthy skin again and just do a maintenance dose every couple of weeks.
It started around the time I started perimenopause symtoms about 42....I'm 48 now.  There is a hormonal connection and possibly auto-immune....but lots of info out there on internet.  Just don't google images of it, if you are work or out in public !!!!!

Hi CLKD and thank you for asking! I am bobbing along OK at the moment though.

I'm in Peri with still fairly regular periods. I have been on Tibolone for a couple of years now. I know this is not usually prescribed for peri and so I do drop into read now and then to see who's on tibolone and how they are getting on.

Searching on tibolone, this thread caught my eye as I hate to think of anyone struggling with LS as it's not pleasant and it took quite a while to get a diagnosis myself.
Also, saw another thread asking if anyone was on tibolone for Peri.  So I thought it was time to join the conversation! Will comment on the other thread bit later on.
thanks again for asking. Very nice and welcoming.  :)

Hi bobbing along

I'm interested in your before and during journey using Tibolone

Would you consider starting a thread on it saying how you were before and the benefits/downsides to using it ?

The more we can read and learn on here really helps some women fight for something that they've previously been refused or had no thought of trying
