pre op assessment
« on: November 16, 2016, 02:44:07 PM »

I have my pre operative hysterectomy assessment next Friday for anaesthetic
I don't have a,date for the hysterectomy but I assume they do the assessment not too far from the operation?
Anyone had any experience?
Thank you

I had my pre-op about a fortnight before the hysterectomy date but as mine was a fast track thing, I'm not sure how normal that is. I was actually surprised it was so far away as no one came and rechecked my BP the morning of operation as far as I can remember. I saw the anaesthetist the afternoon before op as I was in for pre-op procedure but they tend to come round and have a chat after you've been admitted on the op day.
The assessment was weight, height, BP, bloods , load of medical questions and an ecg and took a couple of hours by the time I had ECG and bloods.

Yes, it is normally quite close as they swab for MRSA and check BP etc and if too long between  your health might change.

good idea as you might find that get a date quickly as I imagine fewer folk are that keen before festive season. Also, and this may seem a cruel thing to say, but I wish I'd been told, you can feel pretty rough post operatively and this is normal( all the booklets they give you seem to gloss over this) so try and cut down on any commitments and fill freezer with easy stuff now. I'm 6 weeks post op and it is only this week that the bloating looks any less so you need to take it easy and look after number one.

I was told they try to do the pre op within a month of an op, otherwise they have to retest for mrsa.

I had my op on 30th November last year, so did a lot of Christmas prep beforehand and delegated Christmas to everyone else after. I decorated the settee and allowed myself to be organised on Christmas Day. It was actually a lovely day. Oh and I did a fair amount of armchair shopping. Thevyear before I had my gall bladder out on the 23rd December, so Ive promised to be up and about this Christmas!

Why do you need to stop HRT?

Check with your prescribing practitioner about stopping.

The advise to stop HRT before any pelvic surgery is correct walking the dog. I didn't get my pre-op assessment until after I had been given the date for my hysterectomy. The assessment was the week before the op so obviously every health authority must be different?

This is the advice I was given before my op http://gallery.mailchimp.com/a5692c6457e86f0e2182630fa/files/sbs_recovery.pdf?utm_source=Free+Hysterectomy+Booklet&utm_campaign=30c61c525a-Booklet-14&utm_medium=email  Print it out and stick it to the fridge or somewhere prominent so that everyone knows exactly what you should be doing! It can be easy to forget quite what a major operation this is especially if you don't have a large wound to remind you of what has actually happened inside the body. Go easy on yourself!

My pre op was quite close to op day, it's so long ago but yes I remember being told no bc etc leading up to it so hrt must be the same

My SIL chose to go on short notice list and got a call one morning asking if she fancied coming in within the hour ! She agreed to it !

My op date was planned but was just a few weeks from seeing consultant

Although the method of ops vary nowadays the internal work is the same so don't go by anyone's 'marvellous' recovery, just because Flo down the road was gardening 2 weeks post op doesn't mean anyone else has to.  I had terrible bowel problems after mine, worse than after my first birth

Keep moving about after but follow their aftercare carefully

I would hope the info is even better nowadays, mine was 1999 and I had no internet available , only a leaflet and a lovely GP

I had a really slow recovery at the start, and had stitches outside due to tightening vaginal wall but once I got through that I sailed through and was decorating 5 weeks post op.  But others aren't so lucky and get infections etc, that's why it's not fair to compare recovery, everyone's journey will be different, and we all know how our meno symptoms vary between us !

I'm at 8 weeks post op and having chemo ( as well as ending up with ileostomy ) so I'm maybe not your typical case, but even now if I do too much one day I pay for it for ages afterwards- I can feel all manner of pulling and twinges inside - it's easy to see how quickly the external scars heal and assume that it's something or nothing , but it is s major operation and your insides can be traumatised for ages after being handled , especially if they have to do anything near the bowel- plan ahead and have some easy food in freezer and tins of soup etc that even the world's worst cook can rustle a meal up from xx
