Head feeling thick and buzzing
« on: November 08, 2016, 12:22:11 PM »

Hi,
I am new to this but thought I would see if anyone else gets this problem as I am sure it's menopausal. My head feels as if it's full of cotton wool and about to pop and I get buzzing in the ears. Also feel as not quite on balance. Have been having night sweats for 6 years or more. But all these problems and some anxiety/ worrying all started about a couple of months back. I had what I was told was an Anxiety attack and things have got worse. I just don't feel myself. Any help or advice would be great. Hate these feelings :'(

I bet you hate it.  Even when I know what causes my panic attacks I still hate it.

Cotton wool feelings are 'normal'  ::) we have threads on doing stupid things and fuzziness on here somewhere  ::)

Buzzing in the ears - mine do that all the while in a background fashion, sometimes one/both ears block up so they need a little finger wriggle to release enough to hear again.  As oestrogen levels drop off the body dries up and I think it affects the outer and inner ears too.

How bad are the night sweats?  How does the anxiety affect you?

Hi, night sweats can be horrible sometimes, need a towel to mop the chest. Anxiety started with "thought I am going to die/have a heart attack". But all I had was a Rotator cuff injury but the thought is in there now. Having CBT for this and I think it's working but early days. Just under 2 months. But haven't been feeling myself since around Feb this year. :(

Hello Clare11 and welcome to the forum.

There are many ladies here who can relate to your symptoms and I'm sure someone will be along soon to advise you. You may also  like to tells us a bit more about yourself and how you are coping with the menopause.

One thing is for certain, you are not alone in what you are going through ( I am typing this whilst lying on the bed trying to calm down from yet another panicky hormonal surge!)

Take care and keep posting.

Hi Clare11  :welcomemm: from me too!

Sorry to hear about all your menopausal symptoms. How far along the journey are you? By that I mean what have your periods and cycle been doing over the past 6 years that you have been getting menopausal symptoms - and also how old are you? Have you thought about HRT - unless there is a medical reason why your should not take it then many of us on here would recommend its use (along with most gynaecologists) and it really can improve your quality of life so that you don't suffer/ If you are under 50 then it is advised anyway until the natural average age of menopause which is approx 51.

Do tell us more and see if we can help?

Hi Hurdity, it's good to find somewhere where people will listen and help. I am 54 and not had a period for approx 20 months. Originally I was prescribed AD which I took for a month, they didn't suit me.  To help the "Health Anxiety" I am doing CBT, it is sort of helping but I have the following,
Night sweats
Ringing/buzzing in the ears
Thick head
Off balance sort of feeling
Emotional
Trouble sleeping
Anxiety!!!

I used to dive (500+) dives but had a bend last year and I thought I was ok to dive but this year I seem to be unsure/ frightened and I at not sure if this is due to menopause issues.  Nothing used to worry me. Now I seem to have to check everything. I even sometimes worry that I will die or something go wrong even going to the shops, silly as I know I won't.

I am sure compared to some my probs seem small but they worry me. :cuss: :cuss:

Nothing here is too small - it is *your* worry.  Therefore it matters so do share.

I've had an off balance kind of symptom for years: I'll put my foot down but I then wobble, I never fall and my legs don't feel weak or anything but it's quite obvious to anyone watching  ::) and sometimes my brain seems to be slower than my head when I turn.  Buzzing is constant, background, sometimes the ears feel blocked and buzz louder  >:(  ::)

Hi Clare11

Thanks for letting us know. I was your age and almost at the same stage when I started HRT. My last natural period was aged 53.5 but went onto HRT just before I was 54 - and had had bad night sweats and flushes for some time ( probably on and off for a couple of years maybe as periods came and went). I really would recommend HRT! It will help eliminate many of the symptoms and improve your quality of life. There is no way of knowing how long symptoms will last and you can only find out in retrospect.

I haven't had the buzzing though  :-\

Let us know if we can help further :)

Hi, forgot to say I also get sicky feeling. I have never been sick but it can linger. Can't even say it comes on at a particular time but this seems bonly recent, last few weeks or should I say I have only noticed it over the Last few weeks. Can this be menopausal too.  :-\

I had a lot of nausea in the early stages, particularly 1st thing in the morning but it could hit anytime.  Went away for a few months, and it's just come back again  >:(

I too have had terrible nausea, that's why I first thought it was food poisoning or a tummy bug. After all the tests they said it was IBS, and probably due to menopause. FODMAP diet and digestive aids and anti nausea tablets (non constipating ones) from the doctors have helped, along with some gastro soothe medication. It's been a year now and becoming less severe or frequent.

I think it's quite a common symptom - I had a friend who is married and she started peri the same time as me and thought she might be pregnant as she was getting 'morning sickness'!!!

Yes it's horrible and sometimes it just seems to overtake everything. And then my anxiety seems to kick in as I seem to get electric shock feelings at the lower part each arm, so the good old Heat Attack problem rears its head. 😥
The mind is a very powerful instrument. I never knew the menopause could account for do many problems. c

Hi clare11 I have the spaced out foggy feeling for over a year on and off and yes it is scary, which in turn causes my anxiety episodes, I am learning to just embrace it now as don't want medication. It does make you feel that there is something serious going on but after an mri all they found was sinus issues which I was a bit peeved about but at least I knew I had nothing serious.  The last 3 years has been a complete nightmare with all the other menopause symptoms but I grin and bear it. Eventually the hormones will even themselves out. Well I bloody hope so 😨 . I do get silent migraines too so the fuzzy head could be linked. I hope you will feel a whole lot better after reading all our replies lovie. No its not nice and feel like a zombie walking around when I get a head on but learn to cope with it most of the time. Big hug flower xxxx

A big hug back :bighug: and it does help all the replies. At least I know that I am not the only one who has these problems/issues. I am trying to embrace it too. But any comments back is lovely as they do really help. It's like medicine, good medicine.  :thankyou:
