Hot flushes but only at night
« on: November 02, 2016, 08:36:50 AM »

Hi

Can anyone help me to understand please why I'm getting hot flushes at night but (fingers crossed) I don't have any during the day?

Last night I woke up 5 times, flinging the covers off and feeling like I was sweating all over, but when I touch my skin, there's no sweat.

Just curious as to why this only happens at night?  Any suggestions of how to stop them?  It seems like I wake up and then the flush starts, rather than the flush is waking me up, if that makes sense?

Before I came off the HRT I slept really well, all the way through, every night.

Thanks.

I got them night & day.  But I know what you mean about the ones during the night. I could never work out which came first. I put it down to my subconscious realising something was amiss.

I'm still taking HRT but using a very low dose & very seldom get them during the night now.

I've never had day flushes. Night sweats were awful just months after my hysterectomy when I was 32. Dr said ovaries were failing so gave me oestrogen and they stopped

Thanks ladies,
I'll be pushing to go back on something when I see my consultant in December.
At this rate, I'll think I'll be moving into the spare room so I'm not disturbing my husband.  Has anyone found anything natural that helps to calm the night time ones down a bit?
I sympathise with any woman who is having full on sweats during the day, it must be awful.  I take my (sweaty, night) cap off to you.

Hi JellyB I came off HRT over 5 weeks ago and I am waking up before the hot flush starts. Luckily not sweating very much. I remember the night sweats I had before a period started were worse. During the day I have flushes but not too sweaty, they last about 90 secs but sometimes every hour or less. I started to look into wild sage but I read somewhere that it was useful for the intensity of the flush but not the frequency. Flutterbyx

Thanks Flutterby,
It's just strange that I'm just getting them only at night, I wonder why its just at night.
Not saying that I would want them any other times, but just curious as to why at night.  Our house isn't especially warm when we go to bed and I don't wear full on PJs so I'm not hot.

JellyB - I didn't get flushes during the day when I was starting the menopause, about 46-48, however I did start taking the pill and then HRT very soon after the first symptoms started. I'm now 64.

I'm on low dose patch and still get flushes at night and wake up just before they happen. And I'm an old bird of 66!

Before I went on to HRT I would get hot flashes during the day, but they didn't really bother me too much. It was the night time ones that were the bad ones. I already had really bad insomnia, but if I'd managed to nod off I would be wakened by a pounding heart initially, then the furnace would start. Then when it eventually subsided I'd get the chills. Oh joy!!

I've been on HRT for a number of years now, and I never get day time ones now. However, for some reason, every so often I will get one at night, but it will always be around 4-5am. Maybe there is some connection to cortisol, because that usually starts to rise in the early hours of the morning.

I've suffered with night sweats since my hysterectomy in 2002 and like you have had nothing during the day until the last 6 months.

I've tried everything from no caffeine (decaf tea and coffee only),  no alcohol,  no carbs exercised,  dieted,  tried different supplements and multivitamins all to no avail.

I ended up sleeping in the spare room for a while as I'd be up at least a couple of times a night, changing sheets and pillow cases.

For the last 6 months I've stopped getting the night sweats and now have  dry hot flushes during the day and at night now.

I don't know why the night sweats stopped; it appeared to be of its own accord and nothing to do with anything I tried.

We're all different, so I hope you find something that works for you.

All the best.

Dana this is exactly how mine started at night...I just had nausea with the palpitations as well. Ands lots of sweating. After the furnace the chills. Nowadays (on HRT) I also only get the occasional one at night at the same time as yours but no nausea or cold chills anymore, and less sweating, just the furnace. Also read that cortisol and bloodsugar levels might play a role.

Interesting about blood sugar too. I wonder why it would only happen every so often though. For me it might only be once a month or maybe once every couple of months. I've never made a note of when to really know how often. If it is related to specific things you would think it would happen more regularly. There are still so many unknown things about menopause.

Well last night I slept with nothing on, and that's unheard of for me, as I feel the cold so much I'm usually wrapped up in the duvet like a sausage roll!!
Had hardly any sleep as so many dry sweats all night.  I will definitely be pushing for something from my consultant in December.
Just another question - does your body temperature go up in general throughout/post menopause?
I really do feel the cold but I'd be happy to wear shorts and a vest top today if I wasn't at work!  Still no flushes during the day though, just feel generally warmer than usual.

I can't really answer the question about general body temps during menopause, but I know my body temperature is never the "normal" 37c, but that is only an average anyway. I just took it now and it's a bit over 36c. Interestingly my blood pressure is normally a little on the low side, so I don't know if there is a correlation there.

I have weird night flashes from about 10pm onwards! It's really strange I can be sat watching telly and suddenly I am boiling hot and it lasts for quite a while. I also get stupidly hot in bed, sometimes a bit sweaty on my chest and back of my neck but not much or each time.

This is all new to me and my first post here, so a quick hello to everyone, off to the introduction thread now.....
