Health screening - anybody tried it?
« on: October 26, 2016, 10:22:25 AM »

In an attempt to allay my recurring health anxiety, I thought I might investigate getting a full health screening.    I see there is a groupon offer at the moment [which seems a bit odd - a discount on your health!] but otherwise BUPA and Nuffield do them.

Is there any point?    We just moved a new GP and haven't even had a ten minute chat with a nurse!

One issue I am concerned about is that they will do a test and give me a bad result that would not be a problem if I didn't know about it.  For instance, my mother, who is fit as a fiddle at 80, had a cholesterol reading of 6 - then so did my sister and so did I.  But all of us eat really healthy diets.  It just got us all a bit worried!

DO NOT pay for any Health Screening unless it's via BUPA.  One should be able to discuss this with the GP and ask the question.  Health Screening Services often sell stuff.  So they may suggest lots of expensive tests/MRIs etc. and then suggest treatment for it.

Make a list of your concerns and speak to your GP.

It's up to you Urbanchick - and depends on whether you have symptoms that worry you and which you have had investigated (or if you have symptoms that doc won't investigate!), how old you are and where in menopause. Some health areas will offer you an MOT at a certain age. What sort of screening are you wanting? You can get home blood pressure monitors. Docs will often do blood tests as a first investigation if you have generalised symptoms. Basic blood tests can be done privately very easily - there are all sorts of companies that offer them (leaflets come through the post!)  but most are probably unnecessary if you are otherwise healthy?
