Hi Ladies
I was just saying to my husband yesterday that I must come back and update this forum.

After I started back on the Tibolone I was okay for about a month then the mood swings started again.  Back off to the GP yet again and he suggests that I should go onto an anti-depressant again so I start on Sertraline.  That caused really bad anxiety and wind so they changed me to Prozac.  That solved the anxiety but things weren't still quite right so I went back to 10mg of Citalopram (half the adult dose, the same I was on previously).  I am now feeling so much better, just how I was before my op when I was having the Zoladex implants and taking Tibolone and 10mg Citalopram.  The outcome for me seems to be that I need the Tibolone AND a small dose of anti-depressant because having Citalopram with the Oestrogen only HRT didn't work for me and having the Tibolone without the AD didn't work for me either.

With regard to the progestrogen component, the answer from my GP was that it was not needed rather than it would actually do me any harm to have.  I guess if they thought it would do harm they wouldn't have let me start back on it again.

I was told that the only dose of Tibolone is the 2.5mg so if you are thinking of doubling this please seek advice from your GP first.  Bear in mind it contains testosterone and you will double up on that as well as the Oestrogen and Progestrogen if you take a 5mg dose.

Hope this helps.  All I would say to anyone going through these problems is don't give up and don't let them fob you off.  It's not okay to try and carry on living feeling like that and it most definitely is not your fault.  These does not seem to be a "one size fits all" answer so you will have to keep trying different options to see what works for you.

From what I read when I researched the literature about this a few months ago - when the trials were carried out there was more likelihood of breakthrough spotting and bleeding with the 5 mg dose due to its effect on the endometrium and the 2.5 mg dose was considered ideal for efficacy and control of unwanted bleeding. This is just from my head though ie I haven't looked it up again so hope I've remembered correctly!

Hirdity, that's what the study says yep... I just wondered since I have no uterus if any bleeding would still apply. There are no other studies I could find that look at 5mg so it's a bit of a stab in the dark safety wise but this whole thing feels that way a bit. Xx

Ardee, thanks for your update. I've been considering the idea of an AD, glad it's worked for you. Just a matter of finding the right one... so far they've not been so kind or the trade-offs were too significant but maybe time to try again.

Tempest, thanks for your kindness lovely. I am tempted to just wait it out for a few weeks on the 2.5 tibolone. Mood crashes to the level of intrusive thoughts make it seem very urgent though- but this morning I am feeling a bit better. Thanks for info re the transdermal too x

Ah yes Leahjay - sorry I missed that when just looking back at the last post.  Sounds like it could be possible but I would only take double the amount after consulting with your specialists since it is double the licensed dose. You might also experience more side effects on this dose - so as Tempest suggests you may want to consider transdermal oestrogen along with testosterone (for libido) at a later stage rather than a high dose of Tibolone.

Hi gals,
I feel not too bad the last couple of days- mood has settled a bit and the worst but is just some intense hot flashes in the evening and the blood clot and hyster discomfort. At the moment the plan is to sit tight in the 2.5mg for a couple more weeks. I'd be really happy if I could be managed just with that so makes sense to experiment firstly with just waiting to see what that would be like.

You learn something new everyday. I had never heard of Tibolone at all Your post made me realize more how we are so different & you found what works for you. I have tried ADs in the past but never seem to have got on with them. The side effects were worse than the symptoms but never tried that AD. I am really glad you feel better x
