Stopped The Premarin
« on: September 17, 2016, 12:29:17 PM »

Hi ladies!

I had a long meeting with a different GP yesterday and she has stopped the Premarin due to the extreme dizziness and vomiting. AND she's made a referral herself to Professor Mary Ann Lumsden at her severe menopause clinic.

So that I don't 'crash' and end up in the psychiatric hospital again (we hope), she has asked me to cautiously use Estrogel straight away. Yes, I know. Remember what happened last time? We talked about it in depth and she is very, very cautious but she is hoping (as am I), that the psychosis last time was as a result of my hormone levels dropping dramatically and not from restarting the Estrogel. I am very, very scared I must admit! I will start using the Estrogel this evening at 1 pump.

So today, I haven't taken my Premarin Dose and no dizziness or vomiting (what a relief for it to stop)! It used to come on 3 hours after taking the dose, peak 2 hours after that and I would be lucky if it was away by teatime. The last month has been nothing short of hellish!

It's going to be extremely tough I think as the Premarin leaves my body (I believe it takes days to do so), and adjust to the Estrogel at the same time but we simply cannot risk me stopping HRT altogether. Staying on Premarin until I get to see Professor Lumsden really wasn't an option, for obvious reasons. The pharmacist called the drug company and asked them about my severe side effects and they said I should stop the drug immediately.

So, please wish me luck! I'm expecting a very bumpy ride and I hope and pray that I don't experience a hormonal crash like before. It was truly, truly terrifying!!!!

Oh, just wanted to add that the pharmacist (who was wonderfully thorough) says that the Premarin contains Equine Progestogens, which probably accounts for the dizziness in women who are intolerant to them. Interesting!!! :o

Good luck from me too! Please don't expect the worst as, equally, the best may happen.  8) Glad you have someone more knowledgable lined up to see.

Good luck honey.  I pray that you don't experience what you did before, but remember, if you do, it's not forever and you will come out the other side ok.

Big hugs xxx

Thank you GypsyRoseLee!

There is nothing more terrifying ever is there?

It's truly horrific when that happens so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. So sorry that you suffer so badly too!

It is horrific. I totally understand how you can end up hospitalised. There was another poster on here (think it was DonnaCrichton?) and she ended up being admitted to a psychiatric ward. She had been given the pro strap injection, but no oestrogen. No wonder she went to pieces.

Oh my goodness!!! Yes, I remember seeing a few posts from her GypsyRoseLee. How is she doing now, do you know?? Wasn't she the lady who was struggling with Estrogel doses too at one point? :-\

I haven't seen her on here for ages. She was supposedly being treated by a specialist, but it was madness to stop her own oestrogen and not give her any HRT.

I often think about her and hope she is okay.
