So I'm Not Insane After all
« on: August 31, 2016, 03:29:47 PM »

But that's how it felt. I literally thought I was going insane.
Depression, disturbed sleep, weight gain, no sex, horrible thoughts, sweating, crying (A LOT) vile temper - blah, blah blah.
Some of my friends, who are on HRT,  tried to encourage me many times to visit my GP so finally 4 weeks ago, I did.
I told my female GP I wanted HRT, Her reply: "why?"
 ::)
I explained my symptoms only to be told
menopause doesn't cause those symptoms and that HRT only helps with physical symptoms such as sweats..
She prescribed me anti depressants.
I told her I wanted HRT also and she explained she would only give me a low dose.  Was she correct?

Hello MissAnn and welcome to all the help and support you will need from a bunch of very knowledgeable ladies.  I am not one of them because I don't know about HRT, but I have read enough on this forum to know that you should not have been prescribed anti depressants instead of HRT and that menopause does, indeed, cause all those symptoms and there is a whole bunch of ladies here who will tell you so when they catch up with your post.

Don't despair, you have come to the right place  :welcomemm:

Go back and ask her to prove that your symptoms aren't caused by menopause, ask her to give you up to date info and where she has read such rubbish: then change your GP! Tell the Practice to get their Act together and read what is stated on MM!

Your GP is talking rubbish …… some still believe that a lady isn't having hormonal upheaval unless she is having sweats.  Her time, hopefully, will come  >:(  :-X

Chart your mood/food/sweats etc..  See your Practice Nurse who may be more up-2-date with NICE guidelines of earlier this year which encourages GPs NOT to prescribe ADs as the first line of treatment when ladies present with the symptoms you have described.

Your GP needs a  :kick:  and a  :beat:.

Thank you all so much for your replies.
I have now been on my meds AD and HRT (low dose) for a month. I do feel a little better than I did so could that be down to the HRT rather than ADs?
I'm going to make an appointment with another female GP at my surgery.
Everything you have said is exactly what my friends said when I told them. Xx

Hi MissAnn

Welcome to MM

I too have been suffering anxiety, waking every couple of hours and having to throw bed clothes off. Even have the window open which is not at all like me.

Went to GP numerous times over the past couple of months and was prescribed ADs. Felt abolutley awful on them. Went back yesterday and saw a different Dr who took me off ADs and put me on HRT after I said that I could relate to a number of the peri symptoms. She didnt fob me off.  Just explained how I felt.

Perseverance is sometimes what is needed.

Everyone is very nice on here and knowledgeable.  It has helped me coming to terms with what my body is going through.

Lots of information on here.

At a time when a Lady is tired, maybe worried about the changes, is trying to run a house, kids, older parents  >:( - we SHOULD NOT have to put up with GPs who don't understand the devastation that hormone upheaval can cause  :bang: :bang: :bang:.  GPs should be taught to listen to what the patient is explaining  :kick:

Taking a list along might help as well as pointing the GP to MM!

Saddest thing dulciana is that we are unlikely to know if they get hit  >:( - oh to be a fly on the wall when they realise it is their turn ……….

MissAnn - will you keep us up to date?
