HRT will usually be trial and error. You might get it right the first time, but some women need to try a few different types before they settle on their preferred routine. If you are still peri, you will want to be on a "sequi" type of hrt, where you will take progesterone for a couple of weeks a month, as well as the estrogen every day, so you will have a period.
My preferred method is an estrogen patch and a separate progesterone. I use Provera, which is a "synthetic" progesterone, but a lot of other women use Utrogestan with is a natural progesterone. I'm well and truly post-menopausal, but I've continued to have a period every two months because I don't tolerate taking progesterone every day which is the method that lot of post-meno women use to avoid having a period.
There is no right or wrong, just the routine that suits you bet. Have a talk to your doctor to see what he/she recommends.
