Compression stockings after a GA
« on: June 05, 2016, 05:59:34 PM »

Last Friday I had a hysteroscopy under a general anaesthetic and ,despite telling everyone all along the way that I have a varicose vein and I take hrt, I was told I couldn't have an injection to prevent clots. However, once in the room where my anaesthetic was to be administered I once again mentioned I was concerned about blood clots. The anaesthetist looked at the nurse and said " this woman should have had the injection"!
I had been given  compression stockings to wear, but at this point I was also given what the staff referred to as leg squeezers to help my blood flow during the half hour procedure.
The thing is now I'm home I don't know how long I have to wear the stockings for, no one on the day ward was interested in advising me, all they wanted to do was talk amongst themselves about their holidays and when they were finishing their shift! So complacent they were😡
So, as I'm mobile now do I take them off or leave them on a week or so, could anyone please advise?

Ring the Dept tomorrow and ask to speak to the Anaethetist who should have visited you at the bed prior to surgery >:(.  At least keep them on and legs raised over-night.

I would be putting a written complaint into the Dept .!

Good idea, will do ! Let's just hope I get some answers because all I keep coming up against is apathy. I should have had an ECG at my pre assessment but wasn't offered one, now this, I tell you I am not a happy bunny. The anaesthetist did visit me on the ward prior to my procedure and I mentioned it to him then. Nobody listened.  Oh yes, once I got on the day ward they realised my hospital number on my wristband didnt correspond with what was in  my notes, then the nurse took my temperature and left a plastic cap in my ear! Ye gods, talk about Friday afternoon staff!

I had compression stockings after a
C Section 17 years ago and was allowed to take them off as soon as I was mobile.
I was classed as higher risk for blood clots as I had high BP during pregnancy.

Thank you Tinkerbell, I am mobile again even though I keep having a rest as I'm bleeding quite heavily . Hopefully I'll be OK if I leave them on a day or two longer, but I'll be glad to get them off in this hot weather. Let's hope the ward have more competent staff in tomorrow!

I dont have varicose veins but as it was emergency op I obviously didnt have time to stop my hrt but they said as soon as one is up walking about it would be fime they only stay on if you are immobile.

I kept mine on for a week - not a sexy look though  ;D

You really do sound as though you had 'friday evening non-attention'  >:(.  I would be telling my GP too!

Hi Linz57

I'll reply tomorrow on your other post but just wanted to say I was told to keep the compression stockings on for three days. We had the same procedure but I don't have varicose veins. I just removed them to shower then put them straight back on again. Such a good look!!

I had beautiful bottle green ones after my gallbladder op and was advised to wear them for a few days and was given an injection, whereas for my hysterectomy I was told they no longer thought it necessary.

I'm at  You certainly had a poor experience Linz57. Though the hospital I went to does not do brilliantly on the league tables, l have had 3 very good experiences there for care and attention, but not when I had to go to A&E.

Bottle green? Ooh, extra sexy haha, maybe I shouldn't complain about these white ones then. I'm currently rocking a rather fetching look of cropped denims, surgical support stockings and fluffy slippers, trust me to need them on the hottest week of the year! ::)
Yes, I'm not happy about some aspects of my stay on the ward but this morning I rang up and spoke to a different nurse who was more interested and knowledgeable. I have to keep the stockings on for at least a week and do plenty of walking. Ye gods, I'll get arrested if I walk out looking like this !
I do still feel like putting in some kind of complaint though, with something as important as circulation I should have been listened to.
