Any tips for nausea?
« on: May 12, 2016, 06:44:15 PM »

Hi all,

I'm a few weeks into my first HRT cycle (prempak c) and added the progesterone tablet to my dose a few days ago. I'm now feeling very nauseous and dizzy (with 'head spins' every now and again.) Apparently these are 'normal' side effects but I feel awful.

I'm prone to vertigo anyway so maybe the progesterone has set it off again, but things that usually help my nausea when I have vertigo aren't working  :( I've got my accupuncture travel bands on, have tried ginger biscuits (I don't even like them!) fresh air and peppermint tea. I could only manage a couple of dry crackers for my lunch at work today, when normally I'd have a sandwich and fruit.

If anyone has any suggestions for easing the nausea I'd be grateful.

Thanks x

For severe nausea you can get anti-nausea tablets from GP like Ondansetron, Metronidazole and Domperidone but they stimulate the central nervous system, so can make any adrenaline surges worse, they did for me - although mine was caused by oestrogen surges (up I think). The only things I found that helped were strong anti-histamines like Citrizine, but they do make you drowsy, but they slow down any churning, and Emetrol which also slows down digestion - however, you can't get it in the UK so only on Amazon which works out quite pricey. Very cheap though OTC if you live in the US or Australia.

It does sound like an over stimulation nausea as its accompanied by dizziness, so ginger for example can make it worse as it causes stimulation, but if its from slow transit, which high progesterone can cause, then the Domperidone (Motilium) or antacids meds may suit you better.

Hopefully it will settle once your body gets used to the new hormones but these may help you in the interim.

Hi star-mam

I suffered nasty vomiting and nausea with migraine for years and was previously prescribed motilium in suppository form though it does come in tabs, though I'm not sure it's still available. Also Buccastem 3mg Buccal tabs (prochlorperazine maleate) which are little tabs that you have to dissolve under the tongue. Both on prescription.

I had to keep nibbling, any thing dry, ginger biscuits, ginger cookies, digestives. I also nibbled constantly on crystallised ginger (didn't much like it but it did help), try drinking Belvoir Organic Ginger Cordial with fizzy water. Ginger is utterly brilliant for nausea but of course it helps if you like it!

Hope you find a solution, it's so nasty!

My Dr prescribed Cyclizine and they are very good. They give you a nice warm fuzzy feeling too which is great!

Hi.  When I started HRT in January, I started to feel nauseous after a few days.  I was on the conti version, so progesterone every day.  However, after 4 weeks, it passed and I've been fine ever since.

Give it a while to settle, you may be fine then.

I am so glad to read the above posts.  I am finding it so hard to cope with the morning nausea which is like pregnancy morning sickness.  To wake up most mornings with this over the years is a nightmare.  I have prochloperazine on prescription and I also take Avomine travel sickness tablets. After rising the nausea does wear off but getting this most mornings is very difficult and depressing.  It was so helpful to read the above posts today as I was feeling quite overwhelmed by this symptom.  I have found from the internet that many other women are struggling in the same way.

Thank you

Yes and it's completely not recognised by doctors as a meno symptom. After a long wait for tests I've had an abdominal ultrasound, an endoscopy, a stomach CT and now, next week, I'm being sent for a
liver MRI as they must think liver cancer is more likely than peri - even though nausea and weightloss all gone since being on the pill!

Apparently the hormone state in perimenopause is similar to the first trimester of pregnancy so explains the morning sickness very well.

Eat little and often, 24/7.  Ginger biscuits, dry crackers, nothing greasy.  Some people find scrambled egg on toast eases symptoms.  Bananas and other slow-release food stuffs.  I HATE that nausea feeling.  :-[

Stemotil works for me.  Or travel tablets which can cause drowyness, i.e. Kwells.  Flat Coca Cola is supposedly really good for settling the gut, can never fancy it myself  ::)LucozadeDextrose tablets ……….

Poor you star-mam. It's a horrid feeling, hate feeling nauseous. Peppermints or ginger biscuits usually work for me. Buccastem is pretty good too & you can buy it over the counter.

I feel queasy when my body is hungry  :-\ and as long as I get food into me B4 the anxiety takes hold, it helps ease the feelings.

When I am utterly nauseaous, I cut raw ginger and chew - strong but very effective!
On other times, I boil cut raw ginger in water for 5 min, then drink little sips on and off as needed. Much stronger than the regular ginger tea.
Peppermint drops also work but not always. Can sometime irritate the stomach further.

:thankyou:  Himself puts fresh, chipped ginger into most of our food stuffs.  He adds it to boiled rice which gives it a kick!

I do, too! Always have fresh ginger at hand. Does wonders in chicken soup as well!
