"Oral Thrush in Adults

"There are a number of reasons why this may happen, including:

taking a course of antibiotics, particularly over a long period or at a high dose

taking inhaled corticosteroid medication for asthma

wearing dentures (false teeth), particularly if they don't fit properly

having poor oral hygiene

having a dry mouth, either because of a medical condition or a medication you are taking

smoking

having chemotherapy or radiotherapy to treat cancer

Babies, young children and elderly people are at a particularly high risk of developing oral thrush, as are people with certain underlying conditions, including diabetes, an iron deficiency or vitamin B12 deficiency, an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and HIV."

I've never had thrush before. I remember being told to have live yoghurt when taking ABs in the early 90s. Sadly, I have to avoid dairy, but I have found that the supermarkets are stocking a plain coconut yoghurt with live bacteria. It's yummy! I have to use inhalers, but rinse and gargle afterwards and have never had a problem. This has all happened since my hysterectomy. The gynaecologist thinks all will be calm after once my vagina is re-oestrogenised. I suppose everything was out of kilter.

LIVE plain yoghurt from Greece I think can be bought made from goats' milk.  Certainly goat milk products can be purchased for various applications from several UK Companies who breed goats.

The trick is to apply as high up into the vagina as possible to encourage proper flora up there.  A tampon can be useful and less messy, pushing up as far as is comfy and as symptoms improve, should be able to push further .  Eating LIVE yoghurt encourages bacteria to improve throughout the digestive tract.

Of course, Candida lives in the bowel so personal hygiene is essential as germs can be transferred so easily - such a bad design  >:(  :kick:

Any improvement 2-day?

I finished the course of ABs on Saturday, but I have only been able to venture out safely today. I was going to the loo throughout the day and some nights, rarely doing much. Talk about irritated bowel....very unpleasant, particularly as I had the odd accident. I felt pretty rough yesterday after very little sleep as my stomach was so active from the early hours of the morning, then in the evening long session in the loo. Tummy now calm and things seem to be more normal today. I've been able to go shopping. My fear was that the problems would continue and that I would have a lot of pain and develop new food intolerances as I did 10 years ago, but hopefully not if today is anything to go by. Sadly I think I may have another attack of thrush probably due to the ABs, but I've got some stuff to take in the cupboard. Oh joy! I've got another course of ABs to take on holiday if need be. No way! Can you imagine being on a plane or any kind of travelling? I'd rather itch!

Can't eat dairy. I wonder if it would be OK bypassing the stomach! I can tolerate goats though.....just don't like it. I'm very careful on hygiene, but difficult when I didn't get to the loo on time!  :-\  Fortunately that's over and done with, fingers crossed.

Embarrassing, good job you remained at home!   :tulips:

Sorry, you said about the dairy -  :-X.  I don't like products that tastes like the animals smell  ::)

Looked at the 'fage' web-site and it seems that the particular Greek yoghurt is from cows.  Off now to look at UK-goat sites.

I wanted to buy the coconut yogurt with cultures but tescos don't stock it. I didn't have the energy to go further afield to other supermarkets. They do sell goats yoghurt. I've been advised to cut out sugar again, because of the thrush. I don't eat a lot of sugar, but knowingly have sneaky treats. Trouble is I'll lose more weight which I don't need to.

I think my digestive system is returning to my normal. Not brilliant, but familiar. At least I'm not normally incontinent!

Ju Ju - you can buy non-dairy acidophilus capsules from Holland and Barrett, if you wanted to try those.
