I went for my 5 yearly smear today which I had pre-booked over a month ago.
The nurse could not do it as I was taking Ovestin. Apparently you have to stop taking this at least a week before a smear as it may give you a false result if you don't. 

So, I re-booked with her next Wednesday and have to forgo 2 applications of Ovestin and suffer the burning syndrome for a short period as well as the anxiety of having a smear.
You may want to check with your Nurse/Doctor about this 1 week of no Ovestin rule to avoid a wasted journey and further anxiety.

At my last smear the nurse knew I was using Ovestin and never remarked about it. I didn't use it the night before though. My smear came back fine, might worry now though after what you were told

This all seems very confusing. In the patient leaflet there is no mention of stopping before a smear test and on two separate sites I've found this advice

"For vulvo-vaginal complaints
associated with menopause:
• initially one dose of cream per
day for 3 weeks
• later you may only need one dose
of cream twice a week.
Before surgery:
• one dose of cream daily
beginning 2 weeks before the
operation.
When having a Pap smear your
doctor may recommend a daily
application of cream for 7 days."

I will cut and paste your info and take it to the Nurse on Wednesday and ask her to speak to the doctor and confirm which is right.
I think this needs clarification. Especially as I was told that I would only be offered 1 further smear in 5 years time. Will update with the outcome.

I would send it via e-mail today so that the Nurse can discuss?  That way if the appt. is required for another patient if your sample can't be taken on Wed., the appt. won't be wasted ;-)
