Surgical induced premature menopause
« on: April 01, 2016, 01:16:56 PM »

Hi I Had total abdominal hysterectomy & both ovaries removed due to  stage 1a endometrial cancer at age of 36 so I have gone through surgically induced menopause - I'm interested to know if anyone else in a similar situation is managed by GP or attends menopause clinic.

Hi Belliboo2

 :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis but hopefully you are all clear now. Hopefully also someone in a similar situation to you - ie surgical menopause - might read this and share their experience.

In the meantime, there is information about HRT following hysterectomy on this website here:

You might find that you need testosterone too - depending on your symptoms.

What dose of oestrogen patch have you changed to and what tablets/dose were you using?

Hi

I think 25mcg is considered quite a low dose for someone your age without ovaries/uterus but I haven't had a hysterectomy so am no expert !

I am sure someone with similar circumstances will be along soon to comment

My hysterectomy was carried out in my mid 30's also, but not because of cancer. Ovaries removed in my mid 40's.

Originally I was on 2 pumps oestrogel, then 50mcg Estradot patches. Only now, at almost 60, am I coping on half a 25mcg patch. However, as medical profession keen for lowest dose possible,  I'd think if you are coping on 25mcg patches, good on you.

I've only been the patch a week so time will tell,  Dr did say go back at anytime , I don't have much experience with hrt so it's all very new for me so that's why I wondered if I'm best to ask to be seen in menopause clinic due to prematurity of me experiencing it

Belliboo - you might want to do a little bit of research to look into the benefits of oestrogen on pevention of bone loss/osteoporosis.

You can't tell if you are losing bone density from how you feel....

50 mcg is considered the minimum dose for this, more for women who don't absorb well, but if you are high risk then a blood level of 150 ppmol is recommended - I'm sorry I can't post the links but you can google this.

If you are under 50, not producing any of your own oestrogen and only on 25mcg you will be losing bone more quickly than anyone else.
