period after more than a year of none?
« on: March 24, 2016, 08:50:45 AM »

I thought I had had my last period in Nov/Dec of 2014, had horrendous hot flushes then a week ago I realised I hadn't had a HF since the day before. Then I had achey sides as I used to when ovulating and I sickly sweet smell which I experienced in the days leading up to my period and my boobs were very tender. Yesterday I had a period and it's just as usual - anyone else gone so long between periods? I didn't start until I was 19 (I was anorexic) and was on the pill from age 20 till my late 40s with breaks inbetween, then HRT from 51-55, I am now 56 and a half.
Anyone else like this?

This is most likely to be a late hormonal surge, by the sound of your symptoms - ie recognising the pms signs and also the lack of hot flushes but you should still go to the doctor and get this checked out just as a precaution - but nothing to worry about. The cut off point of 12 months for post-menopausal bleeding is set conservatively so that no woman who might have cancer will be missed - but many women do go on to have further ovulation when more than a year has passed.

Hi Poppi, I had exactly the same thing two years ago. I'd been period free for 18 months and was on HRT at the time. Out of the blue I had the full works and presumed it was just a hormonal thing but went to my doctor just as a precaution.

It's really important to see your GP as bleeding after this long is unusual. I was referred to the hospital for an ultrasound and they found I had a thickening of the uterus and they did a biopsy to check what was going on. It came back clear but I was advised that the HRT had caused an irritation to my womb and that I needed to come off that particular brand Tibolone) as it was known (although I'd not been told) that it can cause uterine cancer.

Best to get it checked, it's probably nothing but I know it can be worrying. :)

Take care

This featured on 'GP's Behind Closed Doors' programme last night. Although the woman in questions bleed was due to her 'old' mirena coil but the Dr did a spiel to camera about the importance of women getting checked by the GP if they have a bleed after menopause. I would make an appointment but try not to worry as with you having the sore breasts etc, it's probably as Hurdity says.

Thanks for all the answers, I feel so relieved, have made an appointment to see my GP and hopefully won't worry so much! I was awake at 4am today and my mind was going overdrive. At one point I was sure that I was bleeding all over, even in my mouth, it was horrible. Now have the "usual" tummy cramps but pleased at the same time (if that doesn't sound too daft?)

The mind is a powerful thing Poppi..making you over anxious when thoughts run wild and always worse when it keeps you awake. Glad you have an appointment. Try not to worry x
