Anyone had Novasure?
« on: March 21, 2016, 09:04:41 PM »

Hello
Just returned from a Gyny appointment. Bit upset as found out my fibroid has doubled and is pressing against my uterus. I asked about the lining of my womb and he said it was very thin considering I hadn't had a bleed since early February. When I asked why this was, he said it was because of me not producing enough hormone....not sure why this upset me because I was hoping my lining would be normal and I wouldn't have been peri - menopausal at all 😥.  It was then suggested that I have a Novasure and a hysteroscopy under GA.

I'm assuming that when my oestrogen levels raise that's what causes my 3 bleeds a month, fibroids cause my heavy periods and made my ferritin levels low and started my depression.

It also made me realise that when I had a 28 day cycle in Jan/Feb, I did feel well because of my hormones but wasn't imaging a drop when they stopped....hence the start of the Oestrogen

Sorry for the ramble but feel like I need these investigations for my mental/general health.  The lovely Gyny said I could be like this for another 5 years, so think I need to go ahead with it.

Anyone had any experience of Nova sure?

Is that an endometrial ablation? I am wondering why you have been offered this if your lining is thin? I thought it was a treatment for heavy periods and if no or only small fibroids? Maybe it's a different op?

Hi Hurdity

It is the same operation.  But the Gyny said as my history is heavy periods resulting in anaemia, then this treatment should work for me.  He said that at the moment, my lining is thin considering me not having a period since early Feb but he would expect once I get fully underway with the HRT, that my periods will more than likely become heavier again...especially with the fibriod.  Also I think the fibroid is in an awkward position, so he wanted me to have a GA for a hysteroscopy and do the nova sure at the same time.

Don't think i've ever heard of anyone having it before.

There have been members on here who have had it - but the one I remember was a member a few years ago and isn't on here any more!

I'm just puzzled re the ablation and your fibroid if that has been given as the reason for the bleeding because it says this on here under treatments for heavy bleeding:

Surgical treatments-Endometrial ablation or resection. Your doctor may suggest, assuming the womb lining is normal or only has small fibroids, that you undergo a procedure which will ablate the womb lining. This can be performed under either a local or general anaesthetic as a day case procedure in hospital. The intention is to make the periods very much lighter and many women will find their periods go away, or at least are significantly reduced.

However I presume the size of yours - 4.5 cm counts as small.

As was said on the other thread - by Dancinggirl - if you had a Mirena fitted you might not need the op and wonder if the gyane suggested this? Maybe he felt it was better just to reduce the lining completely?

Hello
I had the Novasure ablation in 2011 for the same reasons as you, i had become anaemic due to heavy bleeding.
I found the whole procedure from day one to be a godsend as my periods where awful and the fear of flooding was always there.
I never had a fibroid though. I was sore for a few days but nothing a paracetamol didn't cure. I had a very light watery discharge for about 2 weeks and that was it, i never had a bleed again.
Hope this helps and good luck

mollymoo, are you on HRT?  I have also explored this possibility to avoid the withdrawal bleed but apparently it is not used for that, only heavy periods.  That said, I do wonder why women on HRT can't have it although I do realise you still have to use some progesterone to avoid the lining building up.

Logic would tell you that it could be a good precautionary measure for women on HRT because it blasts the lining of the uterus.

i had Novasure in May 2010 because of heavy periods, and I haven't had a period since.
Was told by doctor I was going through menopause in November 2015 now on HRT was told the hrt would make me have a period but it hasn't  ;D

thanks all for replies.

the idea of no periods or lighter ones does sound appealing.  however, he did say that the ablation is least succesful in women with fibroids.

going to think about it over the long weekend.

Mary G, i am on HRT I'm taking Tridestra and so far on the oestrogen only tabs its been great, the telling time will be when i start the two weeks of combined tabs  next week.I didn't feel to great on conti HRT hence the long cycle. The ablation sadly doesn't stop the need for progesterone so its not a solution for the negative symptoms taking progesterone.
Hope this helps.x

Thank you for all your replies.

As I know my lining is okay at the moment, i'm going to see what my next period is like.  Then should know if it's the fibroid causing the heavy bleed.

I can then make my mind up regarding the operation.
