This may seem  really, really daft. In the past I have tried many different types of shapewear, mainly pants or occasionally camis with inbuilt shaping. The pants all end up in an unsightly roll around my middle. Camis end up rolling up. No matter the size they all end up the same way. Now I've been told by a friend to try one of the wear your own bra body suits, with the poppers down below. Does one wear pants underneath to prevent from popper chaffing?I have images of my bits in tatters otherwise.

Oh the memories have come back! Do you mean a teddy suit, Cubagirl?

I had two large babies close together and my abdominal muscles gave up the ghost while carrying my second baby. I was told there was nothing I or anyone else could do by my GP, when I was left with what was described as a mothers apron. ( I was asked when my baby was due, when he was 5 months old, to give you an idea what I'm talking about.) The GP said I would have to wear a teddy suit for support and comfort for the rest of my life. I sat there imagining this rather plump man dressed in a teddy suit! I found the teddy suit incredibly uncomfortable as I am long in body and it cut me up in the nether regions.

There is a happy ending to my story. I opted for sterilisation as I couldn't risk a further pregnancy under the circumstances. The surgeon was very concerned and referred me to a plastic surgeon and I had an abdominalplasty op for which I have been grateful for ever since.

Ju Ju, the cutting of nether regions is what I am worried about. Don't want to be sitting there wriggling about, dying to howk things from twixt my bum cheeks etc.  Not very lady like is it.

As for your op, I too have an apron, but not large enough to require surgery.

I have 2 friends, who took inspiration from the success of my op and sought the same op with the same positive results. Thank you NHS, but I wonder whether i would have to have gone down the private route in the financial situation today. My DH was prepared to remortgage the house.

I think it depends on your body shape as to whether a teddy would be comfortable. Why not go and try one on? Maybe in a well stocked lingerie department or shop? I haven't noticed whether teddy suits are still easily available. My experience was in 1984! A lovely, lovely lady served me in a well known department store. I was very tearful at the time. Gosh the memories have flooded back. I feel so grateful! Thank you for that!

I have a full body shaper from M&S that you wear with your own bra.  I wear my 'normal' pants with it - it doesn't cut in or 'nip', and gives a flattering effect (I'm a big lady - a good size 22, with lots of floppy bits!).  I've worn it for several evenings out and it's never been a problem when sitting for a long time - or even if I dare to dance a bit!

Thanks Scampi, I've looked online at M&S & Debs. Only problem & you might be able to help, is they all seem to be firm control. I'm a 16/18 & hate feeling too tightly strapped in. Everything I've previously tried have been light control. I've been known to disrobe in toilets because of discomfort. Maybe need to go try on & see.

If you wear your own bra then you could try on the next size up as well as your size to see if that's any good. Sounds so much better than a teddy/body suit as you do not have the added complication of getting the right bra size as well as the body size. Much better than what was available in the 80s.

Bought a body in M&S today. Bought size up which was more comfortable. It says it's firm hold, but not excessively so. Phew. One more problem solved.

I tried a body shaper on once and never, ever again.  It was like torture.  the girl in the store advised on size and it did fit but it was such a struggle getting it on and off.

I've come to the conclusion that I'd rather let it all hang out!    My Mum used to say "what you need is a nice little pantie girdle."  never hear that used nowadays do you?

I remember my mum asking me to wear one of her girdles to break it in as it was too tight on her. I swore I'd never wear one again. Awful things.  Body shaper I bought was size bigger so that it would help smooth me out, but not hold me in too much. I want to be able to breath.

The one and only time I ever wore a thong was under a very fitted dress at a works do with my husband.  After about an hour I retreated to the ladies and the thong was consigned to the bin!!!!!!! I sat down for the rest of the evening just in case I fell over and................................................

Last time I wore tights my hubby laughed at me dashing off to loo to take them off as I was so uncomfortable in them. Hardly ever wear tights.

My mum's friend once forgot to put on her knickers before going on a bus trip with her kids. She was terrified in case there was an accident. At least she didn't have VPL.
