I am 56 post menopausal and during a routine MRI on my back a pelvic mass was discovered. I was fast tracked and had a BSO and removal of 11.5 cm right ovarian cyst and peritoneal washings taken on 23rd Feb and am still recovering and waiting for histology results. I still have my uterus. I was on 1mg/5mg Femoston Conti already because of hot flushes and sweats and my gynaecologist said most women are on 2mg oestrogen after this procedure but my GP won't increase mine until he has spoken to the gynaecologist and she is now away  I have had my sweats reoccur post surgery and wondered if anyone has experience of BSO after menopause as the ovaries still produce some oestrogen even after menopause apparently and what dosage of HRT they needed. Also do you need any testosterone added? Thanks.

I've not experienced your situation so can't comment directly - Sorry.

But it might be worth ringing the gynae's secretary describing your situation and seeing what she would advise. It may be possible to contact the gynaecologist even though they are away. Failing that, perhaps see another GP at your surgery, they should have access to your notes.

I agree with Limpy.  Ring the Consultant's secretary, any histology results may well be back by now.  Write down your symptoms B4 the call so that you have them ready ;-).

Well I spoke to a GP this morning and he agreed to add another 1mg of oestrogen to my Femoston Conti so I am taking Elleste solo 1mg as well now and will see how it goes. I did make an enquiry at the Surrey Park Clinic and I may have to pay privately to get HRT tailored to me as GP's don't like doing hormone tests

Well after chasing everybody several times and seeing my GP who wouldn't read out the histology to me I badgered the secretary 5 weeks after having surgery and she gave the game away somewhat and finally got around to getting a consultant to ring me I found out on Thursday that the histology showed it is ovarian cancer so now I am being referred to a gynae oncology specialist and will have a hysterectomy in the first instance but have no idea what else

So sorry to hear about this diagnosis  .

I am wondering why you have to have a hysterectomy because if it was ovarian cancer - haven't they been removed now? I presume you will have to have some treatment so I can see that HRT may have to take a back seat for the moment?

Hopefully your referral will come through quickly and you will be able to ask about the treatment. Do take care in the meantime - this will have been such a shock for you I am sure

katiep1959, I'm really sorry to hear that.  I'm sure that once you have recovered from the hysterectomy, you can have a rethink about everything.  I hope the operation goes well.

Sorry about your diagnosis katiep 1959. I'm really surprised that you hadn't been contacted quickly as, usually, treatment is started really quickly after a diagnosis and five weeks without being told anything seems very lax to me.

Do you know which stage your cancer was?

Hurdity - even if the cancer is the lowest grade (grade 1) then the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus have to be removed to make sure that none of the cancer is remaining. There is detailed info on the Cancer Research UK site.

Thank you everyone. My uterus was left when they did the BSO but as Taz says they won't leave any part behind the uterus and cervix will have to be removed and HRT probably stopped altogether now   Even if they did get it all you are always at higher risk of spread or other cancers. I won't know any more until I have seen the oncologist but yes it was very lax as my gynaecologist went away straight after my op and the histology was picked up by another junior consultant but no-one thought to let me know! Even when the junior consultant rang me on Thursday she wanted me to go in and get the news face to face rather than over the phone but I insisted she tell me as it had been such a farce    Apparently my gynaecologist was shocked when she found out the result, she was certain it was all benign even at the time of surgery so she has given me an appointment to discuss it with her on Tuesday as she knew how worried I have been. I had a feeling something wasn't right all through this and I am trying to be strong for the children as they are in bits but now I know I can get on with dealing with it. That is not to say I don't have my low moments especially when its quiet at night so I am trying to keep as busy as I can.

I don't have any useful advice but just wanted to say that I have read and that your positive attitude is great. Hopefully they have got it all and then the hysterectomy will just be a precaution x
