Bleeding all the time
« on: January 29, 2016, 05:43:51 PM »

Hi , I am a new member, just turned 50 and last year I started bleeding from March every 2 weeks and it's been pretty non stop, , quite irritated  sometimes and not sleeping great . My test came back showing not in peri menopause. My doctor says possibly thining of the womb which I need to get confirmed, bleeding all the time is starting to really worry me, desogestrel is what I have been taking for 4 weeks but the bleeding continues . Is this normal for some females to bleed like this and how long does this go on . I have started taking folic acid also . Hope someone can relate to this thank you

Hello and welcome!

I'm not familiar with desogestrel, but surely someone in the forum will help. I had constant bleeding for months alternating with months of regular periods for about two years before I began skipping months all together. I bet you are in peri, the blood tests aren't terribly reliable early on. Let them investigate the bleeding, in case it is something else, and be sure you're getting your iron in, as it's easy to become anemic.

Thank you , I'm sure I need iron so will get that tomorrow. I do believe I am starting peri menopause as I feel alot of changes , I just need to hear from a few that it can be normal to have this bleeding , just a bit worried and apprehensive about going to hospital to get checked

Hi and welcome Ukg1kcw
In the peri stage ( and you are probably at this stage) your hormones fluctuate therefore blood tests are not reliable.  I am certainly no expert but my understanding is; during peri meno many women won't ovulate every month and this will make the uterus build up and erratic or problematic bleeding results. So, in the peri stage it is quite common to get periods that last longer or shorter, become closer together or further apart and some women get quite heavy bleeds as well.  What you are experiencing happened to me in my mid 30s and my GP sent me for a D&C and then 3 months later blood tests did show I was in peri meno so I was put on HRT.
Your symptoms are pretty classic for the early peri meno stage and you may not yet need HRT but your GP should discuss this with you. I assume you have been given progesterone to try and control the bleeds but a scan should really be done to check everything is OK if the progesterone isn't working. If the bleeding is persistent then I'd get back to the GP and ask for a referral for peace of mind. Keep posting.  DG x

Hi Ukky (can't type out all those letters!!!!)

:welcomemm: from me too. That constant bleeding must be miserable!

As Dancinggirl says periods are very variable at this time and blood tests are unreliable. If you haven't been taking progestogens until just recently (ie the desogestrel) and haven't had a Mirena coil then thinning of the uterus is unlikely as a cause for the bleeding I would have thought?

However if your only symptom is more frequent bleeding then it may well not quite be the peri-menopause yet although at your age this should be imminent! Periods do start getting closer together in what is known as the late reproductive stage - which then merges into the start of peri-menopause when cycles begin to lengthen. Many women experience extreme pms during this time due to the fluctuations/surges in hormones. Oestrogen can reach high levels at ovulation during this time in some women (when the periods are close together) but then drops to a much lower level - leading to flushes and low mood - so there can be extreme mood swings. have you experienced any of these?

Do hope the outcome of your investigations is OK and that the bleeding stops soon :)

Hi Hurdity, it started last March having a period then 1-2 weeks later another and has continued, my doctor gave me Tranexamic acid 500 mg which had been working but this month just now its been 11 days and the tablets do not seem to be drying it up . I would say my moods last year were quite explosive , feeling calm recently, I feel I'm just at the start of this as I have experienced problems waking up during the night and know I'm not getting back to sleep but I have not panicked and just went with it , it seems to last 2-3 days, been going on for the last 6 months. I'm hoping the bleeding stops a little as I have booked a smear test so if anything was wrong surely my test would detect any problems

Hi again Ukky

There are other treatments for heavy bleeding  - they are listed here:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/periodtreatments.php

Endometrial ablation is a surgical treatment, and the Mirena coil provides localised progestogen to thre womb. The good thing about the latter is that it acts as a contracpetive and then when you start to experience menopausal symptoms you can add in oestrogen in the form of patch, gel or tablet.

Hi
I'm new to this but I can relate to you. I'm 56 and last month period came lasted ten days then  four days later another three days of light bleeding . this month I'm on day 12 heavy  and clotting. Doc offered me something for bleeding but as it had seemed to slow down refused  thinking it was gonna end it was like that for three days and now it's heavy again. I am so relieved that I'm not the only one . my doc says menopause and at my age periods should stop soon.
I hope you feel better and send you hugs.
