The coil- experiences please
« on: January 25, 2016, 12:00:01 PM »

I'm fed up with periods, although not heavy I keep getting period pains even when I'm not having a period. I have a medication review shortly so would like to know all I can about having the coil fitted .  The pros and cons whether you still get period pains and spotting  etc or whether some of you stopped bleeding completely, did it work for you or did you regret it. Was it painful for you when fitted? Was it fitted by your doctor or your nurse.

I don't think I need worry about the prog bit as I know it's Norestone which is the same as the one I'm currently using except it's patches.

Oh also is the prog part in the coil a low dose or medium etc my patches at the moment are 50, which I believe is medium dose.

Thank you lovely ladies

I am having a mirena coil fitted in a couple of weeks, so can't help with most of your questions.
But my understanding is , that although it is a low dose of progesterone, it is one of the best ways to keep the womb lining thin as it is local.
I was told that you can use whatever Oestrogen that suits after it is fitted.

If you are already using synthetic progesterone and are fine, then the Mirena should be ideal for you.  If you read the info on this site about the Mirena it tells you that the majority of women do not have bleeds after the first 3-6 months.  I had one post meno and the bleeding/spotting stopped after just a few weeks (this can vary from women to women) and I was then able to use oestrogen as gel to control my meno symptoms - this was my best option at the time. Mine was just fitted by the doctor at the meno clinic but many GP practises have someone within the practise who fits these things.  The fitting isn't pleasant but is tolerable and I had nasty cramps for about 3-4 hours afterwards - my top tip wold be to take some ibuprofen half an hour before it's fitted.
If I were you I'd definitely give it a go. DG x

I had it years ago, not for menopause. I was instructed to take ibuprofen before I went in. I had absolutely no cramping. I felt a little pinch for only a second during the insertion.
For me, it was great initially. I never had spotting or anything, and my periods gradually became lighter until they were only a few days of spotting.
After about 18 months, I developed frequent migraines for the first time in my life and constant morning sickness like nausea. I also became very muscular, which I liked, but later understood it was a problem. And developed ovarian cysts. My gynecologist at the time insisted it was unrelated and removal would not help, but I demanded to have it removed. Within a day my nausea was gone, and after several months my migraines were gone and I haven't had any more problems with cysts.
My thyroid also kicked out during this time, which again my gynecologist said was unrelated. But my new gynecologist believes that the coil threw my entire hormone system out of balance.
If you do well on the synthetic, you'll probably do well with it. It seems people either love it or hate it. And in my case, I loved it until I suppose it built up in my body, then hated it.
