VA question
« on: January 23, 2016, 08:15:47 PM »

Hi! I suffer with the start of VA I think! My question is it seems worse when I'm on the phase 1 patches and when im on the progesterone patches it feels a little better. I thought that VA needed oestrogen which I thought was in the phase 1 patches so surely it should be better on those patches than on the progesterone, or have I got it all wrong..... sorry to be so thick!!! LOL

Not thick - every day is a learning curve!

Vaginal atrophy can present with repeated need to pee and GPs tend to think it's urine infections.  However, if a urine sample is sent to a Lab and found to be 'clear' of growth, it's pretty certain to be the drying of tissues down there = itchiness.  Tissues thin = itchiness.

I have found Ovestin1mg cream keeps symptoms away.  Other ladies use Vagifem successfully.  The idea is to use the preparation every night for 2 weeks then every 4 and 5/6 night.

Hello Robotwars
I've had VA for a bit - when I was having regular (or irregular!) periods I found it was much better when I was having a period and I think just after - so that kind of fits what's happening to you but doesn't seem to make much sense. It did improve when I started using a higher dose of local oestrogen. I'm not on full HRT but local which mostly does the job except when I have a blip (which can last weeks).

Hi Ancient runner, can I just ask what local oestrogen you are using? you say you are not on full HRT which is interesting as I have a doctors appointment on Monday and im not sure what to ask for? Not sure whether to stay on the femseven sequi patches or not... Every time I go to the Doctors he doesn't have a clue and asks what I would like to do, so never gives any advice.......

Hi  - are you on local oestrogen as well as systemic HRT? If not then this is what you should be asking for. It shouldn't make any difference to your symptoms which patch you are on although some women (myself included) find the progesterone phase irritates the bladder ( but I use vaginal progesterone) but also the same when I use Vagifem - well that night anyway!

Here is all the info:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/local.php

Maybe print the above  off before you go and especially the words at the top in case your doc queries the need for local oestrogen as well as systemic:

VAGINAL TREATMENTS

Local estrogen can be used for vaginal and bladder symptoms, when systemic treatment is not desired or appropriate. For some women, vaginal estrogen may be required along with systemic HRT.
