Slight Panic - Heavy Bleed
« on: January 14, 2016, 04:40:16 PM »

Hiya Ladies, Looking for some advice before I dive head first into panic mode.  Have not had a bleed in about seven months (how niave of me to think 'that was it'), however, today I have started to bleed.  Cue, yet again health anxiety, as I am really heavy, with thick dark purple blood, after experiencing quite light bleeds previously on the run up to the months of nothing.  I also have bad period pain, and just wondered if anyone else has experienced this, after such a break.  I'm panicking that this is not a period but some horrible heamorrhage thingy!!  I'm actually scared to stand up for fear of a gush.  Thank you x.

It's understandable to feel panicky but this is normal. Periods can stay away for months at a time and then you get a heavy one or you might get a few light ones months apart followed by heavy ones close together. How often are you having to change pads and/or tampons?

If you take painkiller meds, don't take any Anadin which has Aspirin in it. Aspirin thins out the blood, which can make you bleed more or flood/gush.

That's a good point BreadFruit. My doc recommends nurofen (ibuprofen) if you can use it. There is something in it that can help slow bleeding. Also, if you are passing clots then although that's a bit yucky it is a good sign as it shows your clotting mechanism is working well. First thing in the morning may be tricky for you tomorrow as the blood pools while you are asleep and when you stand up or you go for your first wee it can look very frightening.

Thanks for the reassurance ladies.  The pain has eased a bit, so I feel a bit better this morning.  Slept with a double layer of pads on in case of leakage in the night, but was fine.  Just got a bit of a shock when I went to the loo yesterday, never had such a heavy bleed, was quite a mess !  Will see how things progress today.  What with all the awful symptoms I've had and then the seven months without a bleed I feel so down that I'm not as near the end of all this as I thought x

Hello there first of all don't panic, you have built up a lining over the 7 months so either have oestrogen to blame or you may have ovulated. Have you had any signs a period was coming like PMT or ovulation type mucus a couple of weeks or so ago? How old are you? This may happen several times before menopause arrives- it is to be expected but scary I know!

Machair, hi.  No PMT really, except for period type pain, but I get that quite a lot even without a bleed.  I 'm 51.  Bleeding practically non existent today, but goodness only knows what tomorrow will bring!
