Menopause progression - anyone else entering "a new phase"?
« on: January 12, 2016, 04:24:06 PM »

Hi, I was pointed to MM by a doctor at my local hospital.  I seem to be going through a new phase which is really no fun.  I've been checked out for fibroids and ovarians cysts: blood tests all good, but a 1.8cm cyst on my left ovary and possibly another on the right plus two small fibroids in my womb.  This all started with some serious pain in my left waist area with sharp pains lower down.  The pain kept me awake through the night for about three weeks.  So, we think we've identified all this, but waiting for a CT scan to make further check on my new lodgers! A routing appointment again at the hospital in 3 months.
Anyway, coincidentally I've started feeling really rough, not sleeping properly (partly due to needing to pee a lot during the night), disturbed by sustained hot flushes, and resurgence of night sweats plus joint pain.  My concentration levels are at about zero.  To complicate things, I have a back problem that I usually manage well but which has resulted in problems with nerve pain in my legs/numbness/severe pain in my feet, especially in the night and on rising in the morning. I have a feeling that this might have masked some of the menopause symptoms.
I'm getting more depressed by the day and have ended up off work as I feel so unwell.  I'm not overweight (5'11'' tall, 10st6lb) usually keep active.  Started getting the occasional spot on the face plus upper back and backside.  Been getting a discharge for years - that seemed to go away with the worst of the hot flushes/sweats, but all now returned, coincidental with getting the pain which we think is related to the cyst situation.
Phew, now I've offloaded all of that, any suggestions anyone?  Is this normal?  Does it mean I have to do HRT to get any relief?  What must I do next with my GP?  I know I need to get the CT Scan result but should I make a strong case for getting the cyst(s) removed?
I'd appreciate any suggestions. :)

Hi and welcome to MM WhamBam
You seem to be doing all the right things.  You don't say how your periods are but what you're describing seems typical for the peri menopause phase when the hormones are fluctuating - this can last some years with progressively more erratic symptoms.
You need to see what the doctor suggests regarding the cysts but I believe the fibroids could be an issue if you need to use some HRT to control meno symptoms as oral HRT can stimulate fibroids and result in problematic bleeding. Having a Mirena fitted could be an option as this will often shrink the fibroids and then allows you to use oestrogen as gel or patch to help reduce and control the flushes etc.
Do read up all the info on this site and keep posting - we are here to support you.  DG x

Hi WhamBam

 :welcomemm: from me too.

Yes  I agree with the others - you could take HRT but depends on your age and what your periods are doing and how they've been over the past couple of years.

Hello WhamBam and welcome to the forum.

I can't add anything to the replies that you've already received but you have definitely come to the right place for help and guidance on your menopause journey.

Wishing you well and keep posting.
