Health anxiety and humble pie
« on: January 09, 2016, 07:16:52 PM »

I have to admit I may have rolled my eyes a little everytime I've read mention of health anxiety on the forum. I thought I have enough anxieties already, no sense in being a hypochondriac too. Ha! I now realize I think I have the health anxiety! When logically I know that the beginning of all my problems coincided with my cycles going crazy, but I still get this stupid idea that there's something more sinister than menopause going on. And of course, it means I'm dying. Immediately. Must go plan funeral now. That's the health anxiety, no? This humble pie is tasty.

I think many of us feel the same thing - but some don't talk about it! I try to keep my inner hypochondria at bay  ;D

Although I know I'm splitting hairs, and that health anxiety is the newer more PC term for hypochondria, I tend to think of hypochondriacs as people like mr Ethyl's great uncle who took great delight in " being at death's door" for 40 years, whereas there's no pleasure in HA when you are in its grip. Perhaps if there were more support and knowledge available to women at this time then so many of us wouldn't automatically think the worse every time a new or weird symptom cropped up.

You are right, coldethyl. There's a difference between looking for something to be wrong when there's nothing wrong and trying to figure out what is wrong when there's clearly something off. When I back away and think rationally, I know the source of my symptoms. I just don't know how to fix them. But that doesn't stop me from diving down the rabbit hole sometimes. And STILL the main thing I find information on is hot flashes, which I have had, but most times don't find then very bothersome. Hmmm, perhaps they were easy because there is information out there on that so I never gave hot flashes much thought.
