long bleeding
« on: November 14, 2015, 06:16:24 PM »

Hi everyone,
Been a long time since I posted on here but need reassurance once again. I'll be 58 next month and still getting periods. For the past year they've started to become irregular and been missing some months. Started this period about 3-4 weeks ago, not very heavy to start with but 2 nights ago had horrendous gushing and a clot about the size of a plum maybe bigger. then another gush and another smaller clot. Ended up in A & E(who were wonderful) got an appointment in December with gyne. Also this time having period cramping whivh haven't had for a long time. Had been taking Tranexamic acid the 3 previous days from gp and the hospital game me progesterone tabs to take to stop it. Prob is I have terrible health anxiety and panic attacks and am scared of taking the tabs so am still bleeding. Tried hormones as birth control years and years ago but they didn't agree with me. Just wanted to know if this is a symptom of meno coz terrified I have cancer or something. Sorry for all the waffle.
Many thanks,
Kim

Hi Kim

First of all my heart goes out to you you must be so fed up with all this. 58 is late to be having this, but no so unusual these days. I am 55 and still having periods, and a lot of ladies are older than me on here. Sometimes if you miss months you can get a build up of the lining - hence the heavy bleeding, or it could be fibroids for example.

Were you regular until this year, and are heavy periods normal for you, or something completely new and different?
I went through quite heavy bleeding just as my periods turned from regular to skipping, but I had always suffered from heavy periods due to fibroids. Now they are very light but always massive PMT first.

I am sure you will feel happier after your appointment. You may want to ask your GP for a blood test to check for anaemia, as you could be bleeding more heavily if you are low in iron, and heavy bleeding will deplete iron stores in itself.

Hope you feel better soon

Hi hewitt - I agree wth Machair - maybe you have fibroids and also may well be anaemic with heavy blood loss at your age.

You really should take the tablets - I presume it's norethisterone you have been given? It does work!

The hormones (oestrogen) in HRT are much weaker than the hormones in the BCP - but it doesn't sound like you need anything at the moment except to slow down the bleeding with the tablets. It's good that you have an appointment with a gynae to check everything out re the bleeding, but until then do try not to worry although I know it's easier said than done!

Many thanks to the ladies who replied to my message. Went back to gp on Monday as the tranexemic acid didn't work and over the weekend more horrendous clots and flooding and back to incontinence knickers(which were brill). Started norethisterone and that has practically stopped it except yesterday and today when I went to the loo there was blood on the paper and I'm getting slight crampy pains on and off. What I want to know is if this is ok and has it happened to anyone else.
Thanks,

Hi Kim

If it's stopping the bleeding more or less then it's doing its job - but if you are worried then do give the surgery a ring to put your mind at rest. Is your gyane appointment soon?
