Hi this my first time in here and I really need advice please.  I am 58 and my last full period was over 12- 2 years ago.  I had a TV ultrasound 2013 for spotting most days which was ok.  However although I have as the occasional spotting since that scan it stopped when I lost weight.  Since putting weight on I noticed I started to spot once a month and I mean a spot just one spot about 20p in size.  I have now worked out that this is happening every 4 weeks then that's it!  I went to my GP who sent me for TV ultrasound which has now shown endometrial thickening and suggested rapid access gynaecology referral.  I am absolutely worried sick and I wondered if anyone else on here had experienced this as they said i am post menopausal yet my GP thinks it's cyclical spotting.  I can't ask anyone so would really appreciate some advice.  Thank you

Hi BLD19 

What a worrying time for you but it is good that your GP has referred you just to make sure that everything is ok and to work out whether you need some treatment to shed the lining. The words "rapid access" can sound really serious but the guidelines are that anyone who experiences bleeding after being without a period for longer than a year has to be referred immediately. Do you know how thick your lining is?

So sorry you have all this worry - did you say you had your last period 1-2 years ago? You may still have ovarian activity especially with this happening every four weeks but a scan be will reassuring. I think your GP is being alert and hopefully your mind will be put at ease.

My friend has had this a couple of times since her periods stopped. it happened in the first 4 years afterwards.
She just needed a course of progesterone tablets and that gave her big bleed that cleared the lining.
When she got spotting again a  year or so later after tests she again had to take the tabelts and has been fine since.
Just because your lining it thickened does not have to mean ther is anything wrong with it but if it stayed thickened for many years then this could become cancerous so thats why they like to get rid of it ( simpliefied explanation).
The rapid access is as has been said because everyone who has been period free a year gets this.
They usually do a hysterosocpy to take a small sample of womb lining to see what its like and then give appropriate treatment.

Always worrying for anyone but like my friend could be simply solved.

Thank you Machair.  My GP thinks this is still cyclical because of it happening just one time a month?  I just don't know what to think

Sorry to hear about all this worry.
The good thing is you will be seen quickly and the investigations are simple and you'll get a result there and then - usually.
If you have put weight on then this can raise your oestrogen levels, which could mean you are ovulating or having anovular cycles. But 58 is quite old to be still having a cycle. Try not to worry.  Wait until you have the results and try not to worry too much till then.

Sounds like you had a late menopause and if it's happening cyclically - less worrying even though unusual. Hopefully all will be OK. I had a hysteroscopy & biopsy for spotting a couple of years ago and all was OK. Also if they send you for this you don't have to have a general anaesthetic - I had mine done without any anesthetic and it was really quick.

Put it back on I notice the spotting had started. I started to keep a record and I predicted that I would spot last Sunday and I woke up to a very small spot (sorry old blood) on the liner I had put on and that's it nothing else?  Very strange.

Yes Hurdity I was still having regular full periods at 56.  Although the big heavy periods have gone over 12 months ago I have never gone 12 months without spotting?  I still have the same symptoms if getting warm (not really a flush) getting hot while sleeping but sleep ok so no menopausal symptoms I couldn't handle, but I wonder if this is because of my hormone levels still over the place?

If you have not gone 12 months without any spotting at all then it sounds hormonal.

I decided this morning to go pvt as the bit knowing of the details was really stressing me. So I rang for an appt today and the gynaecologist fitted me in at 1.30 today.  She was lovely.  The endometrial thickening is 8mm just 3 above normal.  She has arranged a hysteroscopy for Thursday next week on NHS.  She said all looked well a could of cysts.  She said it could be because I am "plump" my body is making more hormones.  I feel a little more reassured but still nervous.  Thank you for your reassurance

If you still have some hormonal activity going on then 8mm is not unacceptable. Your dr is right to refer you for tests but it's likely to be 'normal' and if not then a drug like norethisterone should quickly sort it out. Good luck!
