Advice please
« on: September 22, 2015, 11:18:25 AM »

This morning I have been for a second appointment after a breast scan last week.  I had an ultrasound and needle biopsy, and unfortunately the specialist thinks it is more than likely breast cancer.  The lump is less than an inch and they've caught it early.

My worry more than anything is that they will stop my HRT which they've said is a possibility.  I've been on utrogestan and Elleste Duet since March of this year.  The Utrogestan especially has made me feel brilliant and my sleep is now fantastic.  I was unable to take other forms of progesterone, and I was evil before I started it and very unhappy.  Does anyone have any suggestion of what I can do if I am asked to stop taking them?  I'm terrified of going back to where I was six months ago.

So glad they have caught it early but what a worry.  Why dont you email Dr Currie - she will give you the best advice - theres a small charge but well worth it to get the correct info as you will have enough on your mind already,

Sorry to read this debq but at least it's been caught early. I think it will depend on whether your tumour is oestrogen receptive as to whether you will be allowed to continue with HRT. There is a paper here about it although it is from 2003 http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/463856

Let us know how you get on as there is still a chance that it wont be cancer from what you have said. If it is then you will know more once you find out which type of tumour you have and the treatment you will be given.

What support have you to call on?  Maybe speak with the Breast Care Nurse at the Clinic? and also, send an e-mail to Dr Currie on here.

I had oestrogen receptive breast disease in 1995 - a lump was found to have 'changes' within it so I had 2 operations, removal of 5 lymph glands - no spread; bone scan and radiation for 4 weeks.  Tamoxifen made me ill.

However: although advised against HRT if I was suffering from meno symptoms, I would certainly have pressed for relief as I believe in quality of Life  ;)

Deb

I have no experience of breast cancer so can offer no advice I'm afraid but I didn't want to read and run so big hugs to you and I know there are many ladies on here who will have experienced cancer and if you let them, they will support you through this.

Hi debq

Just to add to the others, to say I am very sorry to hear about this and wishing you all the best both with the outcome of your investigations and eventual treatment if necessary.

If you do have to stop HRT there are medications that can be given to help prevent hot flushes and they are listed here:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/prescribed.php I can see why you might be reluctant but if it is a question of quality of life/being able to function and you are unable to take oestrogen - then I would give this serious thought.

If my symptoms were just hot flushes I think I could cope, but I truly turned into a witch, I was sobbing for no reason and the insomnia was relentless.  I agree, the quality of life is so important.  I'll email Dr Curry and see if I can get some advice.

Thank you for all your kind support.
