Hello
« on: September 16, 2015, 07:52:12 PM »

Hi I'm new here and have a few questions. I'm 50 (just) and probably peri menopausal but difficult to know as I have the contraceptive implant and consequently very infrequent periods, if you can call them that! I have very disturbed sleep, night sweats but not too bad, huge mood swings but most of all I ache, mostly in my inner hips and neck but quite often back, shoulders etc etc! Is this really just age? Doc says nothing much I can do about it but don't think that's right, but don't want to make a fuss. Happy to go down the homeopathic route but not sure where to start. Any ideas ladies please would be gratefully received

Im 53 still in peri but big gaps between periods. I am suffering a lot with upper back pain, have had it a long time but it is a lot worse now and neck pain where it joins my skull, very annoying as it takes nothing to set it off.
I too got my vitamin d checked early this year it was very low but after a massive intensive boost I was up at 97 and still felt just as bad so that was a load of old tosh.

Welcome to the forum.  I am very nearly almost 49 and I too suffer with joint pains, really bad ankles at the moment.  Am off to see the doctor tomorrow, but not sure what they can do for me.

Welcome Hetts1965

I am post meno and i still get all the aches and pains, shoulder, neck, back, legs, wrists, fingers blah blah blah. Horrid time, just try and keep your chin up (not easy) and use this site a lot. The ladies on here have helped me over the years to keep a bit of sanity. It does help when you know you are not going mad and are not alone with the symptoms.

Hi Hetts

Welcome to forum.
I am 49 and the same.  After a lousy experience or two with my GP I have now changed and am waiting some tests before going further down treatment route.

meanwhile I am having acupuncture which is a great help, also do yoga each week (and some salutations inbetween).  I strongly recommend a well trained acupuncture specialist, who has done many years of training.  Not nhs.

Thank you for all your messages. I do already go to an acupuncturist have done for 10 years for appalling headaches so she helps the joints but only lasts 5 minutes! I have had lots of blood tests done recently to see if I had a thyroid problem as exhausted all the time but came back negative. I don't really want to bother me GP as she's acrruend and I think she probably thinks I'm a bit of a pain!
I woke up this morning so despondent and tearful with joints aching all over, I'm really fed up with this

maybe try a different acupuncture bod?

YOu are NOT bothering your GP, that is what they are there for.  You are important and should not have to feel this way. :)

Do you take any pain relief?  When oestrogen levels drop muscles become lax = aches and pains.  Any pain should be treated regardless of the cause!

Hi Hetts1965

 :welcomemm: from me too!

In answer to your question - no it is not just age! You should not expect to have and put up with aches and pains at 50!!! Low thyroid, oestrogen and testosterone can all cause aches and pains.

What was the reading from your thyroid test? The range for normal does not necessarily mean that if you are normal you don't have symptoms - it's a cut-off reading for treatment - but we are not all or nothing are we? Do phone the surgery and ask what it was and also other things like iron, Vits etc - better still ask for a print-out - it is your right to have this info! Also as a matter of interest did you have FSH etc done too ( although one test on its own can't tell you definitively where you are in menopause). Do you have any other symptoms of underactive thyroid eg putting on weight (and not over-eating) and feeling cold?

If you are having night sweats then you may well be peri-menopausal and have low oestrogen. I'm not familiar with the contraceptive implant - is it progestogen or oestrogen? I am assuming the former?

Absolute rubbish that the doc can't do anything about it!!! Unfortunately homepathy won't do anything other than placebo - but won't replace your oestrogen levels, if you are deficient.

Hopefully we can help you a bit more so do keep posting!
