Feel like I'm back to square one.
« on: September 14, 2015, 09:07:22 AM »

Hi ladies

i had a lovely couple of months where I was almost symptom free.  For the past three weeks symptoms are back and are as bad as when I first experienced them I.e anxiety, crying, headache, panicky feeling.  I am worried that they are not going to go this time and I am going to be like this forever.

Has anyone else experienced this?  I am 43, peri on ads, been experiencing symptoms on and off for last couple of years.

Bracken willowshimmer - welcome to MM
At 43 you are young to be low on oestrogen and this will not be helping yrou physical or mental state. I would ask to be referred to a meno clinic or Gynae to get advice about HRT.  Being oestrogen deficient before the age of 50 can lead to serious long term health issues so a bit of HRT now may solve the way you feel and help in the long term.  Do read up all the info on this site to get really clued up.  DG x

Don't worry Bracken, you don't need to be like this forever. If you get the right mix of hormones then hopefully some kind of normality will resume...     Are the ADs prescribed for your perimenopause? (It always amazes me how GPs think we're mad when in fact we're menopausal)? If so, have you tried any hormones at all?  It may be worth asking to be referred to the local menopause clinic if your GP isn't up on this. Because of your age, if you're taking ADs instead of hormones you won't be getting any of the benefits you'd get with natural hormone replacement as i understand it (protection against osteoporosis, cardio vascular issues etc) so it's definitely worth considering this.

Welcome bracken

Yes, I completely recognise what you describe. I was only just 43 when I started with inexplicable anxiety, extreme mood swings, deep depression which came and went with the moon, tearfulness and sometimes overwhelming feelings of panic. Then all my symptoms would disappear overnight for several days, if not a couple of weeks. I once went a whole 5 weeks totally symptom free and foolishly assumed I was cured, until it all swooped back just as bad as before.

I thought I was having a breakdown. I spent 7 months on ADs but they did little for me. This was because I desperately needed hormones not ADs.

I experimented with HRT, but although it helped a bit it just wasn't powerful enough. At our age we usually need far heavier doses of hormones than fellow lady sufferers in their 50s and 60s.

With the wonderful advice and support from the ladies on here, especially Briony, I swapped to taking the combined Pill 6 weeks ago and it seems to be working much better for me. I still have a few down days, but I can cope with them better and overall my mood is more positive and I feel stronger emotionally.

It might be worth seeking out a specialist? My consultant told me she was very concerned at the level of women in their 40s taking ADs for anxiety/depression when really they need hormone therapy.

Thank you ladies for your replies.  GRL your symptoms describe me to a t.  Although I wouldn't wish this on anyone, it's nice to know I'm not alone.

my drs have been useless during this time.  They won't prescribe HRT or the pill because I get migraine with aura.  Think my next course of action is to get referred to a meno clinic (but not sure what they can do if I can't have hrt or the pill?).

Hi Bracken willowshimmer
If you suffer with migraine then the HRT patches can often be ok. I would ask for a referral to get a specialist to look into your options.  DG x
