Prempak - Perimenopausal
« on: August 19, 2015, 05:12:11 PM »

I wonder if I could ask for some advice from the forum.  I am new, so a bit of background... I am 51 still having periods but they are erratic - every 50 days, then every 21 days, then a 40 day break etc, so planning holidays etc difficult.  I had the occasional night sweats but nothing uncopable with.  So went to the GP to see if I could go back on the pill effectively to regulate my periods which was my main issue.  I had been on Microynon during my 20's and 30's, so thought that would be ideal.  Was told though that risks too high and that she would put me on Cerelle - a progesteron only mini pill.

This was an absolute nightmare of headaches, depressive feelings (I had never had a hint of depression) and completely no libido.  I stopped taking them after a month and then experienced the worst period with period pains and a really heavy flow that was similar to when I was 13/14!  So I decided I would let nature takes it course with regard to my hormones and would rely on Northisterone for stopping my period if going on holiday.

We have recently returned from holiday and I noticed whilst on Northisterone that I felt fab - great libido, no headaches etc, and due to the uncertainty of my period I had taken Northisterone for 3 weeks (a week before my holiday and during my holiday) to delay my period.  However, I now have intolerable night sweats at least 5/7 nights so returned to my doctor this week to see if she could recommend an HRT to alleviate the hot sweats.

She prescribed Prempak and after taking only one tablet I felt extremely poorly - disorientated, sleepy, complete lack of concentration, horrible bloating feeling etc.  I have never had such an immediate reaction to taking medication and have not taken another.

The advice I wanted was whether any of you felt the same way after taking Prempak and if so did you continue with it and what your experience of taking Prempak was.

I feel now that I have messed my body around too much and should leave well alone, but wonder if there is an alternative you would recommend that I should seek from my doctor.

Sorry for long post - just a bit all over the place.

I have tried prempak and felt awful on it, I experienced headaches, sickly feeling, pains in my stomach, felt like I was walking around in a haze, didn't get on well with them at all, so GP changed me to cycloprognova, same reaction, I have also tried mini pill cerazette, with that I just bleed all the time, so im now one month in on trying the patches, as these are suppose to be easier to tolerate as they don't go through your liver. im now on everol sequi patches..... good luck it is a game trying to find something that suits you

Hi and welcome to MM equinox
Do read up all the info on this site so you can get really clued up about the meno.  You are clearly in peri meno so your hormones will be fluctuating.  Prempak does suit some women but it is the oldest type of HRT - also happens to be one on the cheapest!!! Look under TREATMENTS above and you will discover there are many different types HRT to try.  Perhaps try Femoston 1/10 next - kinder progesterone and tolerated well by many women.  Keep posting   DG x

Hi equinox and  :welcomemm: from me too!

Just to say I agree with Dancinggirl - other women have reported feeling bad on Prempak and it is quite a strong one anyway as the oestrogens are a mix of horse oestrogens so not the same as in our bodies. It does also sound as though you might be intolerant to some progestogens. Femoston might just do the trick. Otherwise there are transdermal HRT types (ie patches or gel) which are gentler on the digestive system. Tablet HRT can have a more pronounced effect on libido (ie decreasing it) than transdermal  - from what I've read.
