Oestrogel - and breast issues
« on: August 11, 2015, 02:59:59 PM »

Hello
Have tried a few times to start HRT (Oestrogel +Utrogestan) but have had to stop for various reasons and other medications being taken to address my fibroid.

Now wanted to start again, so 4 days ago started on 1 pump gel and 100mg of Utrogestan vaginally. I feel fine, but my breasts have enlarged considerably and are sore.

Back in May when I first started, I noticed an immediate change in my breasts in the same way, I stopped then after only a few weeks as I had to start taking this other medication (Esmya, which also affects breast tissue apparently)... Since May I have had consistantly sore, swollen and lumpy boobs.. So, I guess my question is has the very small dose of Oestrogel affected me that much to permanently alter my breasts? And will they go back to their normal (b cup) if I stop again?  Or does it settle down after a while anyway?

I am really uncomfortable - and suprised that so soon after restarting the gel, I can see such a huge difference in my boobs! I know its not the end of the world, but Id rather not have them!

Have had an intial exam and doctor thinks I have a cyst, which she says she is not worried about, but I have a mammogram in a few weeks

any advice?

Surprised your doctor didn't suggest taking Starflower capsules. I had this problem & when I saw doctor he told me to get them, but they have to have around 250mg of GLA. I took them & after about a month I was back to normal again. I continued to take for a while afterwards, then stopped & have been fine. I have big boobs anyway, but oh the pain especially at night was awful, so I sympathise.

Thanks Cubagirl.. I will get some, am taking 2 x1000 mg of fish oil but can add the starflower...

Am going to stick to it this time, and see if the breast thing settles down.. is it a common thing with Oestrogel?

thanks again!

Don't think it's so much the oestrogel, but quantity of oestrogen. I got it when my oestrogen was increased. I'm on patches now & oh boy did it hurt when dose was increased.

My gynae says it's quite normal when starting any HRT to get sore or tender breasts as this is the hormones waking to these areas again - it usually settles after the first few cycles. Just persevere and things should be fine.  DG x

Hi abbyH

I hope it settles for you.

Just to say you are right of course to make sure with the doc to check whether there is anything wrong even though it is likely to be absolutely normal ie due to the initial increased oestrogen. Far better to have an unnecessary visit than miss something - and everyone shoild be vigilant in examinaing their breasts for any changes (I'm not good at this myself but glad to be reminded!).

As for permanent changes - since being on HRT (for the last 8 years) my breasts are certainly a bit larger and much firmer/denser - before that they were shrunken floppy things (my oestrogen was very low!), and I expect them to go back to being like that if/when I eventually come off HRT.

Re the feeling of lumpiness persisting for several weeks - maybe they would have gradually returned to their former condition after a few more weeks - it's not necessarily quite such an instant reaction.

You didn't say whether you are post-meno or how old you are so if you are still peri-menopausal this could also be due to your own hormonal fluctuations.

Hi Hurdity, thanks for that

I'm 51.. Peri
Had quite a difficult peri over the last few years, exacerbated by autoimmune thyroid
so, weight gain, hair loss all the nice things... and some hot flushes/night sweats insomnia and now the breast changes.. They feel more lumpy and fibrous than before, which I know is a peri thing as well.. I'm going to stick with this low dose for now and see what happens over the next few months.. I guess it's a worry when we get lumps and bumps, but the very good doc at the breast clinic last week didn't seem bothered, we will see...

thanks for your help and advice...
